Australian TV stars took to the red carpet last night for the 12th Annual ASTRA Awards, the nation’s biggest night for subscription television. Taking place at Sydney’s Carriageworks in Redfern, the Awards reward the creativity, diversity and quality of the Australian subscription television industry, with 22 awards voted by audiences and experts alike. The Awards also took the opportunity to honour Australian Television darling Charlotte Dawson, in the wake of her tragic passing.
In a moving presentation, an Honorary ASTRA Award was awarded to recently deceased and very beloved Charlotte Dawson ‘To honour an exceptional contribution to the Subscription Television Industry.’ Charlotte Dawson had previously been recognised at the ASTRA Awards for her work on Australia’s Next Top Model.
Alex Perry, close friend and colleague of Charlotte’s, tweeted during the presentation, ‘REMEMBERING OUR BEAUTIFUL CHARLOTTE TONIGHT AT THE ASTRAS @astraevent @foxtel @fox8tv WITH sarahmurds…’
Despite the shadow of Charlotte Dawson’s death, and the touching tribute, the ASTRA Awards were a celebratory evening, an opportunity to recognise the talent in subscription television.
The likes of Jennifer Hawkins graced the red carpet, the starlet wore a figure-hugging Roberto Cavalli gown, reminding us all that she’s still one of the most stunning women in the business. Hawkins was nominated for the Favourite Female Personality award for her work on Australia’s Next Top Model.
The ladies of The Real Housewives of Melbourne flew to Sydney for the evening, dazzling on the red carpet in full-length gowns, and showing off their affinity for all things embellished and bedazzled.
Australian television veteran Kerri-Anne Kennerley looked stunning as always, making her ASTRA Awards debut in a hot-pink Alex Perry gown.
Awards went out to a wide variety of programs and personalities. Australia’s Next Top Model, starring Rescu. Fashion Expert Alex Perry, took out the award for Most Outstanding Reality Program. Wentworth won Most Outstanding Australian Drama.
Selling Houses Australia proved its popularity by winning Favourite Program in the Australian category and taking out both the Favourite Personality Awards in Male and Female categories with hosts Andrew Winter and Shaynna Blaze.
Channel of the Year was won by Showcase, home of popular US drama series including Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and House of Cards.
