Between the Golden Globes and the Oscars sits the Screen Actors Guild Awards – and in this highly unpredictable awards season, we were prepared for just about anyone to take out the big awards.
As the celebs made their way to the Shrine Explosion Center in Los Angeles it was announced that Aussie girl Rose Byrne would be a last-minute addition to the presenters, joining James Marsden, Amy Poehler and more.
On the red carpet Golden Globes winner Jennifer Lawrence showed up looking stunning in a sleek, strapless, navy Christian Dior gown and Chopard jewels despite battling pneumonia. After rumours that the 22-year-old star might not make it, fans were thrilled to see her not only show up, but be her normal, jokey self. She told E! News’ Giuliana Rancic she was, “just Diorin’ it up”.
Unfortunately, the starlet’s gorgeous look was overshadowed because just minutes before Amanda Seyfried was spotted on the red carpet in navy Zac Posen and glittering diamonds. The pair looked almost identical! Talk about a fashion faux-pas.
Once the awards were underway, a very suave looking Justin Timberlake awarded Anne Hathaway with the Supporting Actress in a Film award. With that and a Golden Globe behind her, the Oscars buzz is deafening. The star choked up as she thanked her family, husband, fellow nominees and casts. She beat out the first Aussie on the chopping board, Nicole Kidman, who was nominated for her performance in The Paperboy.
The cast of Modern Family, who were snubbed at the Golden Globes, took out the Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Television Series awards. Tina Fey was another comedy winner, taking out the Female Actor in a Comedy Series for 30 Rock. While accepting the award she joked, “I share this with my sweet friend Amy Poehler… I’ve known you since you were pregnant with Lena Dunham.”
Alec Baldwin and Carl Reiner (who created The Dick Van Dyke Show) awarded comic Dick Van Dyke with the 49th Lifetime Achievement award. On the red carpet, he told CNN that the SAG Awards had given him a lot more than just awards – he met his wife at the ceremony! He said, “First time I ever hit on a woman in my life! I walked up to her and said, ‘Hi I’m Dick.’ I don’t think she knew who I was!”
Claire Danes continued her winning streak with the Actress in a Television Series, Drama award for Homeland. At the Golden Globes, Homeland swept the Drama category but that was not to be the case again. Downton Abbey took out the Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Television Series, Drama, bucking the all-Homeland all-the-time trend.
The Lead Female Actor award was one of the tightest races on the night with Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Chastain both pegged as winners. The award went to Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook. Experts are still skeptical about her scoring the Oscar given that the award rarely goes to a comedy. Only time will tell!
Daniel Day-Lewis took out the Lead Male Actor in a Motion Picture Award for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s historical epic Lincoln. Day-lewis is no stranger to big awards and the experts will be very surprised if the star doesn’t take out the Oscar in a few week’s time.
The final award for the night, Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture, went to Argo, Ben Affleck’s latest directorial effort. The film also took out the Best Film award at the Producer’s Guild and the Best Motion Picture, Drama at the Golden Globes making it a front-runner for the Oscars.
