The 63rd Annual Emmy Awards celebrated all things small screen, bringing some seriously huge stars together. We check out the goss from the red carpet, the big show opener, the surprise guest appearance and give you a full list of winners. Read on for all the star-studded details!
Seeing Red on the Red Carpet
It wasn’t just the carpet that was red at the Emmy’s arrivals, it was clearly the hot colour of the night with stars such as Lea Michele, Kate Winslet, Sofia Vergara, Adrianne Palicki, Kerry Washington and Nina Dobrev heating it up in scarlet-hued frocks.
We spoke to Sophia Banks-Coloma, stylist to the stars, about what she thought of the red carpet looks. She said, “the carpet was very safe this year, no one went really fashion forward.”
Her favourite pick of the red pack was Kate Winslet who chose an Elie Saab gown that really showed off those famous curves. Sophia picked Best Actress in a Comedy nominee Amy Poehler as her most fashionably forward, saying she looked super-chic and on-trend in her navy blue Peter Som gown. Claire Danes took out Sophia’s first prize for going different on the night. She wore a black and blue sequinned gown. After topping most best dressed lists at the Emmys last year, we’re not surprised Danes took it up a notch for this year’s arrival.
It wasn’t just Danes in sequins, many of the ladies took sparkle to another level with sequinned embellished gowns. The sparkles on the dresses were perhaps part of the reason stars opted out when it came to necklaces, instead going for hair clips, big rings and earrings.
Purple was another favourite colour on the carpet, with many stars including Kelly Osbourne, who opted for a dark purple, and Julia Stiles in a gorgeous lilac number from Georges Hobeika Couture.
Another big trend spotted by Sophia Banks-Coloma was lace. Her lace pick of the night was Minka Kelly whose navy blue Dior gown turned heads for all the right reasons. Kelly arrived with her Charlie’s Angels co-stars Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor. The new series hits screens in the US on Tuesday.
Finally, no red carpet is complete without a jaw-dropping appearance from Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks. This year she wore a very sparkly silver number from Aussie designer Johanna Johnson and looked every bit as glamorous as we’ve come to expect from the star.

Jane Lynch Opens the Show
Much is made of the host at any award ceremony and this year’s Emmy Awards had punters excited about seeing Jane Lynch take the stage. And the Glee star certainly didn’t disappoint, opening the show with a fantastic musical number on the nature of television.
At the end of the performance, Lynch is met with her Glee alter-ego Sue Sylvester in a hilarious skit that ended with Sylvester saying, “TV is a vast wasteland where good ideas go to die,” to which Lynch replied, “TV is a vast wonderland. There’s no place like TV.”
Surprise Appearances
In an attempt to spice things up, the Emmys brought the infamous Charlie Sheen to the stage for a surprise appearance! Sheen awarded Jim Parsons the Lead Actor in a Comedy award for The Big Bang Theory. Before presenting the award he said, “”Before I present Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, my old category, I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody here from Two and a Half Men. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together and I know you will continue to make great television. Now, on to the Emmy.”
Pop kings The Lonely Island performed at the show and brought out a bevy of surprise stars including John Stamos, Maya Rudolph, Ed Helms and Akon to perform their SNL skit 3-Way (The Golden Rule). The performance was hilarious but a little risqué and had some tweeters exclaiming their disapproval. 
It is nice to see an awards ceremony taking risks for once though!
The Winners
Modern Family was the big winning show, taking out a huge four of the six comedy titles; Directing, Writing, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor as well as the all round Best Comedy Series.
Melissa McCarthy was the shock winner of the night, taking out the Lead Actress in a Comedy prize ahead of comedy big-wigs Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Amy Poehler , Tina Fey and Martha Plimpton.
