The biggest names in music got their glam on for the 2013 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas today and the blue carpet was very Vegas indeed with Taylor Swift in a very short, shimmery bright blue number, Jennifer Lopez in her signature combination of gold, nude and a neckline so plunging it feels like a stretch to refer to it as a ‘neck’ line, and Ke$ha in a bum-baring black number that was risqué even for her.
After the attention-grabbing red carpet was over, these stars and so many more entered the MGM Grand Garden for the ceremony where the awards were handed out in a huge 45 categories.
The biggest winner of the night was Taylor Swift who receive the night’s top honour, Artist of the Year, along with seven other awards including Top Female Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist and Tops Country Song for ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’.
It’s to believe this one is still getting awards three years after the fact but Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ swept four major song categories! For all of us here in Australia, it feels like that track really is one that we used to know and not a current hit that should still be winning awards but in fact it was only released overseas last year and the Billboards are based on data tracked between March 12 2012 and March 10 2013. Whether we’re over it or not, it’s definitely nice to see an Aussie making it so big internationally.
Rihanna was the other big winner of the night, matching Gotye in numbers and taking out the R&B artist, album, and song categories. Prince was given the Icon Award for a career that includes 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 Singles and performed an incredible medley of classics for the audience.
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, were just a few of the 16 artists who performed throughout the night.

There was no relaxing over the weekend for the celebs at Cannes Film Festival!
Rooney Mara, who has just been unveiled as the face of Calvin Klein’s newest fragrance Downtown, attended the brand’s beachside party at the festival where Rooney was one of the many big name guests. The star is also in town to debut her latest film Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.
Aussie model Megan Gale made a jaw-droppingly glam appearance at the film festival in a custom-made Alex Perry frock. She was accompanied by four of her fellow L’Oreal Paris sponswomen as the cosmetics giant has been the festival’s official makeup artist since 1997! We’re loving seeing these Alex Perry frocks on the ruby rug at Cannes — for those who missed it, last week Great Gatsby star Elizabeth Debicki turned heads in a frock from the master of glam as well. Keep ’em coming, Perry!
And, finally, everyone’s favourite red carpet gal Jennifer Lawrence was also in town with co-star Liam Hemsworth for a Catching Fire photo call. With that duty said and done, she slipped into a stunning Dior frock for the premiere of Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian. The next night she was back into Dior for the official Catching Fire party. After another outfit change, Jennifer briefly attended the party with Liam before heading home to catch some z’s.
Bad news, Leo fans — we’re looking down the barrel at a Great Gatsby premiere without Gatsby.
Despite the fact that Sydney was his home for the four-month extended film shoot, and the home of his colleague and friend Baz Luhrmann, Leonardo DiCaprio is snubbing his eagerly anticipated appearance at Wednesday’s premiere and after party for The Great Gatsby.
The actor cited a schedule change in the announcement, saying, “Unfortunately, I am unable to return to Sydney for the film’s Australian premiere due to a schedule change.”
He joins Isla Fisher, who plays Myrtle Wilson, and Gemma Ward, who has a small supporting role in the film, in the growing line-up of big names not attending the celebrations.
Luckily we can still count on Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki and Baz Luhrmann to be there on the night but we have to say, Gatsby without Gatsby just doesn’t quite cut it!
For those mourning the loss of a local Leo hit, here’s a little reminder of what we’ll get to see on the big screen…
