2013 MTV Movie Awards: Red Carpet, Award Ceremony, and the Winners

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

With categories like ‘Best Shirtless Performance’ and ‘Best Kiss’, and Rebel Wilson as host, we knew we were in for a light-hearted look at cinema with the MTV Movie Awards.

By Chloe Schneider

The Red Carpet
As the stars descended upon the red carpet in everything from denim to a cigarette headpiece (no, really), it was clear this year’s looks wouldn’t disappoint in the flops and ‘what-the’ moments we’ve come to expect from the MTV Movie Awards.
Kim Kardashian, whose maternity looks have been questionable at best recently, showed off her baby bump in a surprisingly sleek black number accessorised with a gold neck piece. Little sister Kylie was also on the ruby rug in a nude ensemble that showed over her enviable model figure.

Selena Gomez continued her red carpet winning streak in a gold beaded frock by Julien Macdonald. The look was a little J-Lo esque and a lot of fun. We have to say this girl has gone from strength to strength since ditching Justin Bieber! Chloe Grace Moretz wore a denim dress which we have to say took the ‘casual’ look a little too far.

Aussie Kylie Minogue divided critics in a silver and sheer number by Paco Rabanne. We’re not all that sure about the frock (is that chain mail?) but we are loving that paired-back beauty look. Kylie looks the picture of health and the slightly undone look is perfect for the more casual ceremony without looking like she’s just dashing out for some groceries.

Pitch Perfect’s Han Mae Lee had the ‘WTF’ moment of the night with a cigarette butt headpiece. This one has to be seen to be believed. Check it out in our MTV Movie Awards 2013 Red Carpet Gallery.

The Ceremony
Hollywood has had a long love affair with bad Aussie stereotype so, with Australian Rebel Wilson playing host for the night, it was no surprise that the MTV Movie Awards were full of them.

It all started with a hilarious skit featuring James Franco in a ute telling Rebel she had been chosen to host the ceremony to which she replied, “But I’m just a fat simple girl from Australia. The only thing I’ve hosted is this parasitic worm. I still don’t know what hole it came out of.”

And with that, the bar was set and Rebel’s performance continued to be exactly what everyone had hoped – a genuinely funny, albeit sometimes cringe-worthy parade. There were plenty of great one-liners (at Zac Efron, “Do you want to give me an Australian kiss now? It’s like a French kiss but down under.”) and some truly horrific outfits (koala-emblazoned sweater, anyone?). The host also proved her star-powe by taking out both the Breakthrough Performance and Best Musical Moment awards for the night.

Emma Watson gave one of the best speeches of the night, telling the young audience they can achieve anything and throwing in a few jokes about her career.

Entertainment for the night included Selena Gomez performing a Bollywood-esque rendition of her track ‘Come & Get It’, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and a show-stopper from the Pitch Perfect cast.

Another highlight was the debut of a new trailer for the next Hunger Games film. Three words: we. can’t. wait.

The show ended with the announcement of the Movie of the Year award which went to The Avengers. We have to say it is a bit of a random choice and not what we expected. The other films nominated included Django Unchained, and Silver Linings Playbook. We get that this is a younger demographic but come on!

Oh, and that Best Shirtless Moment? It went to Taylor Lautner who did a bit of a skit featuring candy falling out of his pockets, a pillow underneath his shirt, and saying, “I’ll be honest with you. I turned 21 recently. And I’ve been eating and drinking. That picture was taken a few years ago. The good old days. You could bounce a quarter off those things.” Yes you could Taylor, yes you could.

And that concludes another awards show! Check out the Full Winners List from the MTV Movie Awards 2013
