The beauty scene is forever changing with a new product launching daily, somewhere around the world. But, when there’s a new brand launching, it really has to be unique, or ‘wow’ enough to get our attention. Being a makeup artist, that means lots of playtime!
With the rise of beauty retailers and ‘e’tailers into our market, it means we now have more access to these exciting new brands, allowing all our makeup dreams come true. Why not change it up, try something new, it might be just what you have been looking for all these years!
Urban Decay
For nearly 20 years Urban Decay has been shaking up the beauty scene, starting out with just 10 lipsticks and 12 nail enamels.
Seeing a void of bold colour in the market, Urban Decay is Beauty with an edge and allows anyone to feel like a makeup artist at home – A brand that was in high demand when launched into Australia earlier this year.
I personally use and love the Naked palettes, they have all the shades I need – ever – in just 3 palettes and as a makeup artist it makes my life that little bit easier. Even though Urban Decay is all about Experimental Colour, I just can’t go past their Naked range, all things Nude with a twist.
Urban Decay Naked Range – RRP $78 each
MB PRO TIP:
With contouring still a big part of today’s world of makeup, nude tones used on the eyes are bigger than ever.
As a guide:
- Naked palette 1 is a neutral palette suited for all skin tones.
- Naked Palette 2 is great for a fair, pink-based skin as it is all about bronze tones and will not throw too much pink.
- Naked Palette 3 is perfect for an olive, yellow-based skin as it has a rose gold theme and can lift a sometimes flat looking skin.
Charlotte Tilbury
We are seeing more and more successful makeup artists launch their own makeup or brush ranges and why not? We now what we want and how we want it, it makes sense to trust the artist behind the looks we love!
Being a big fan of Charlotte Tilbury’s work – famous for those creamy nude lips teamed with bronze smokey eyes filled with sultry drama – I was over the moon to hear the launch of an Aussie site. So much goodness and with Charlotte being the name she is within the industry, plus inspired by the 90’s supermodel, I just knew I would love every product in her range…. And yes, I do!
With working with countless celebrities and super models over the years, I can see why they love working with her with this little gem, Super Model Body.
Charlotte Tilbury – Supermodel Body RRP $88
MB PRO TIP;
I know with working so many backstage shows over the years, we are forever mixing illuminator with body moisturizer. But, if there were one bottle that did it all, I would be in makeup artist heaven.
Well, it’s been found! The rollerball application means just one sweep down the centre of the legs, then a little blend with your hands, boom, Victoria’s Secret, look out! Genius Charlotte – thank you!
Antonym
Natural beauty is on the rise with eco-friendly brands popping up more and more. From the packaging to the ingredients, each product is certified by Ecocert and is cruelty free with a very organic vibe running through the brand.
More and more of my clients are requesting products of a more natural origin, and it’s great to see a brand such as Antonym give chic results with sustainable packaging.
‘Antonym is a brand that combines natural ingredients with strong performance. Natural makeup used to be synonymous with a natural look. Antonym is changing that.’ Says Valerie Giraud, Creator and Founder of Antonym.
My top pick to try is the Certified Organic Baked Foundation.
Antonym Certified Organic Baked Foundation – RRP $52
A lot of traditional powder foundations (even of natural origin) can leave the skin looking matte and all one colour because of lack of radiance. The baking process in this product turns the foundation crème into a delicately textured powder that blends with skin for a radiant complexion and light reflecting properties.
MB PRO TIP:
Powder foundations are best applied with a Kabuki brush, in circular motions. This distributes the product evenly and allows for a buildable coverage in areas of need – think of it like a buffing effect.
Marc Jacobs
It’s a common trend that large fashion houses tend to launch matching makeup ranges; it makes sense right? Fashion and beauty are one, finishing your look from head to toe. While most have instant success with the fashion audience already there, it takes a lot to impress us makeup junkies.
The packaging war between brands is real and I do love the playfulness of the Mac Jacobs Beauty products, plus all are easy to use.
Lips is where I feel Marc Jacobs gets it right every time, great colours, great textures with great results.
Nude lips are one of the longest running lip trends and anyone can wear them as long as you know your skin tone. It’s best to go opposite of what your skin tone is telling you for best results.
Marc Jacobs Nude Lipstick – RRP $43
The New Nudes sheer gel collection is the perfect everyday lip colour: sheer, moisturizing and the most effortless glide over your lips, with the gel formula promoting more pout!
MB PRO TIP:
I love to apply lipstick with my ring finger. I find the curved edge of my fingertip, dabbing onto the lip gives a fuller shape and the bond factor is higher being dabbed on, like a lip stain. Using a lip liner first can over sharpen your lip shape. Dab, then finishing off lip edges if necessary.
Sneak Peek
Word on the street is that Christian Louboutin is launching a 38-shade lipstick line this September.
Loving the already available nail lacquer range – containing a lid resembling the stiletto trademark heel – these new lipsticks are sure to turn heads and deliver premium results with three available textures, Silky Satin, Velvet Matte and Sheer Voile, inspired by At Deco and Middle Eastern Antiquities.
Apparently there is a ring on the lid so that you can thread ribbon through it and wear as a necklace!
