5 Tips For When You Travel Solo

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

Solo travel can be some of the most rewarding times of your life. Out of the comfort of your own country and away from your friends, you’re able to experience new challenges, try new things and learn more about yourself. However, it can also be daunting exploring an unfamiliar place as a solo traveller. To ease the nerves, Topdeck have pulled together some top tips on how to tackle the challenge.

Stay in a Hostel and make new friends

Hostels are the perfect place to find affordable accommodation and meet a various mix of people. Most hostels have a common room, and organise bonding nights or tours, so take this opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone or book a tour to meet likeminded people.

2. Embrace being alone

One of the best things about travelling solo is being able to do the things YOU want to do! You have full control of where you go, what you see, do, and eat! If you do end up in a group, don’t be scared to do your own thing. You’ll discover so much about what you like (and don’t like).

3. Go on a Pub Crawl

Keep your eyes peeled for pub crawl tours and sign up to one. It may take some time to get a bit more relaxed, but in no time you’ll be playing beer pong, dancing with people you’ve only just met and enjoying the nightlife of a new city.

4. Travel with a tour group

Tour groups are a great way to travel alone because you’re never really alone. The travel company plans your whole trip, itinerary, accommodation and transport. Not to mention the Trip Leaders who know the areas and let you know the best places to go (and to avoid). You also pay for your trip in advance, so you all you have to worry about is having a great time.

5. Be organised

To avoid feeling alone or unsafe in an unfamiliar setting, take the time to research an area in advance. It is also a good idea to provide friends and family with a copy of your itinerary so they have a rough guide about your upcoming plans. Going out in the dark can also be a bit intimidating when you’re in a strange place, so start your days earlier to allow plenty of time for safe sightseeing.
