The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards were off to a watery start after a burst water pipe forced security to evacuate media and shut down the red carpet just hours before things were set to kick off. Thankfully, no dresses were harmed in the dramas and the mess was cleaned up just in time for the Hollywood heavyweight’s arrivals.
Red Carpet Gossip
The Aussie stars made us proud, with 23-year-old Margot Robbie, who is set for huge things this year thanks to her part in The Wolf of Wall Street, an early red carpet favourite in her white embellished gown by Gucci. It was clear the up-and-coming star is still adjusting to having her life in the public eye, as she looked a little uncomfortable when Giuliana Rancic started questioning her about her love life on the ruby rug.
Cate Blanchett, who said she was feeling, “overwhelmed, a little terrified” over whether she would take out the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama award, certainly had nothing to worry about in the fashion department thanks to a picture-perfect Armani Prive black lace and tulle gown. As the poised star walked away from her interview with Ryan Seacrest, she said, “I hated every second of that.” We can only assume the star was joking, but we wouldn’t really blame her if not…
BEST AND WORST LOOKS FROM THE GOLDEN GLOBES 2014 RED CARPET
Lena Dunham admitted she was as uncomfortable as that bright yellow Zac Posen made her look as she told Ryan Seacrest she’d rather be, telling Ryan Seacrest, “None of this is quite right on me… I have been starving for days.”
Jennifer Lawrence’s arrival was perhaps the most highly-anticipated of the night, and although her dress was a little too wedding cake, she brought her A-game in the entertainment stakes. The funny star barged in on Ryan Seacrest’s interview with Taylor Swift and threatened to push her down the stairs saying, “it’s my turn now” before dropping her diamond bracelet mid-interview. She then told Seacrest, “My mum said, ‘Can I come down and get in the car with you’ and I said ‘No’ and then the elevator doors closed.”
There were three expecting stars on the red carpet and each went with a very different option — Kerry Washington opted for a white Balenciaga, Olivia Wilde was stunning in a sea-foam green sparkling dress, and Drew Barrymore wore a pink floral dress that seems to have divided fashion critics! Emma Watson’s dress turned a few heads for the wrong reasons, although the red frock was absolutely stunning from the front, the back revealed what looked like a pair of tights!
E! News’ coverage caused a little controversy when they had a pop-up on site that said, “Fun Fact Michael J. Fox was Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991” which caused many Twitter users to very accurately point out Parkinson’s is in no way a FUN fact…
All in all, the waterworks and drama on the red carpet were contained to the pipe burst at the beginning of the night and things were off to a solid start…

The Ceremony
There was a collective sigh of relief last year when it was announced Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would be presenting at the Golden Globes for the second year in a row. The pair made the otherwise often-boring proceedings full of laughs last year and their performance was undoubtedly one of the most unanimously-praised ever.
Thankfully, the pair did not disappoint this year, bringing the sparkle and the laugh-out-loud moments in full force. The proceedings kicked off with a monologue packed full of hilarious one-liners including the following;
On being invited back to host: “This is Hollywood. If something kind of works, they’ll just keep doing it until everyone hates it.”
On the excess in Wolf of Wall Street: “If I want to see Jonah Hill masturbate at a pool party, I’d go to one of Jonah Hill’s pool parties.”
On George Clooney’s modelising ways: “George Clooney would rather float into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”
On Matthew McConaughey’s weight loss for Dallas Buyers Club: “that’s what actresses call ‘being in a movie’”

With the opener kicking things off on the right foot, it was time to begin the awards. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks took the stage to present the Supporting Actress award, which went to none other than awards-season-favourite Jennifer Lawrence who seemed shocked and a little terrified as she accepted the honour, saying, “Oh my God I don’t know why I’m shaking.” American Hustle proved a big winner on the night, with Amy Adams taking the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) award. Although Amy was almost cut-off mid-speech, she refused to get off the stage without thanking her daughter who, “isn’t old enough to really understand, but I love you so much.” Cute!
Elisabeth Moss was awarded the Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-series award for her role in New Zealand mini-series Top of the Lake and opened her speech with, “Oh sh*t” — clearly too shocked to contain herself!
Breaking Bad was to be one of the biggest TV winners on the night, with Cranston being awarded the Best Actor in a TV Series (Drama) award as well as the show itself scoring Best TV Series (Drama).
There was a bit of a tribute to Mandela after U2’s Ordinary Love won the Best Original Song award. Bono said in his speech, “It really is personal. He [Mandela] really turned our lives upside down. Not with hate… but love… it really is a dysfunction love story and that’s why you really should see it.”
This year proved that you don’t have to be young and new to the scene to win awards — Jacqueline Bisset won Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series a full 47 years after being nominated as most promising female newcomber and Jon Voight was awarded for his work in Ray Donovan 43 years after being nominated as Best Actor for the first time.
It was a particularly good night for Amy Poehler who not only nailed her hosting duties, but also managed to take home the Best Actress in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy) for her work in Parks and Recreation, beating out the likes of Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel. Ahead of the announcement the comedy queen was on film getting a massage from Bono while the nominations were announced, and then locking lips with him when she won!
Gravity — which was long ago pinned to become an awards season favourite — was awarded Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron’s incredible work.
Leonardo DiCaprio was the next star to win, taking out the Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) gong from under Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, and more. He thanked Martin Scorsese, one of his biggest inspirations.
In the Drama category, Cate Blanchett was awarded Best Actress for her performance in Blue Jasmine and as she accepted the award, thanking Woody Allen for allowing her to be in the slipstream that allows her to win “heavy things that do great things for her biceps” before asking the people at home if we can hear the cut-off music or just think people start talking really fast for no reason.
Matthew McConaughey took the Best Actor category for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club and thanked his mum for not allowing him to watch TV or watch anything he could do himself, and a wife who kicks him out the door to “go get it done”.
The last award for the night was a bit of a shock win! The Best Picture Drama award went not to Gravity as everyone expected, but to 12 Years a Slave. Brad Pitt, who was a co-producer and co-star in the film, was not present to collect but British filmmaker Steve McQueen said that without him, “this movie never would have been made.”
At the end of the night, American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave have been pinned as Oscars favourites but only time will tell who takes it out!
