The 84th Academy Awards had all the makings of a Hollywood film providing laughter, tears, entertainment and fabulous costumes as Tinseltown’s elite came together on Hollywood’s night of nights. The most coveted awards in the entertainment industry went to overwhelming favourites, Hugo and black and white film, The Artist. Oscar veteran, Meryl Streep and The Help’s Octavia Spencer also took home a golden statue. Read on for all the winners!
Billy Crystal took to the stage for the ninth time to host the 84th Academy Awards. The Jolie-Pitts, George Clooney and casts of the The Artist and The Help could be seen in exclusive front row seating enjoying the festivities. The comedian started the show with a montage of the nominated films in which he shamelessly inserted himself (and locked lips with George Clooney!), followed by a song which he dedicated to the nominees, in old Hollywood style, much to the delight of the audience.
It was then down to business as an array of industry stars took to the stage to present the nominees with their awards. Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz were a gorgeous duo and a statuesque Gwenyth Paltrow joked around with a drole Robert Downey Jr.
Fantasy feature film, Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese, cleaned up with 5 Awards including Best Cinematography and Visual Effects, with the Artist following closely behind with 4 gold columns, including major nods, Best Picture and Best Director.
French actor Jean Dujardin took home the Oscar for Best Actor for his sublime albeit silent performance in The Artist. “I love your country,” he joked before thanking his family and the cast and crew of The Artist. Dujardin won the Oscar over fellow nominees, Demian Bichir, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Gary Oldman.
Octavia Spencer of The Help won Best Supporting Actress, tearfully accepting the award while Christopher Plummer, accepting Supporting Actor was at 82, the oldest person to ever receive an Oscar.
Meryl Streep, having been nominated 17 times, won her third Academy Award, the last one being in 1982! Streep had all the makings of an Oscar winner, dressed in shimmering gold and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Streep beat out Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara, and Michelle Williams.
