9 Key Fashion Trends from the Oscars Red carpet

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

The world looks to the Oscars Red Carpet as a sign of fashion to come for the rest of the year. We dialed up LA based, Aussie celebrity Stylist and all round glamour girl Sophia Banks-Coloma to edit the key trends we can take from red carpet to our own wardrobes in 2012.

Sophia Banks-Coloma’s Top 9 Red Carpet Trends:

1. The White Dress:

It came in all shades and styles, ivory, meringue, cream, floor length, long sleeved to plunging necklines and even a cape- white was one of the biggest trends to be seen on the Oscars Red Carpet. I am pleased to say I predicted this one!
Red hot examples: Mila Jovovich, Shaliene Woodley, Octavia Spencer, Sofia Vergara, Kelly Ripa, Guiliana Rancic, Bingbing Li and of course, show stopper Gwenyth Paltrow in Tom Ford.

2. Gold and Metallic Accents:

There were a lot of metallic accents on the red carpet this year inspired straight from the New York, London and Milan runways. From Jessica Chastain to Maya Rudolph and Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams and winner Meryl Streep, the sparkle didn’t stop on the red carpet but made its way through the after parties as well.

3. The Choker Necklace:

Having taken a backseat to cuffs, statement rings and earrings for a while, the necklace nay, the choker necklace is officially back on the map. Diamond chokers brought the glam and are guaranteed to catch the light and brighten up the face.
Rescu. Loves: Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Gomes and Natalie Portman brought the trend back in a big way.

4. Bead embellished dresses:

Spearheaded by red carpet favourite Elie Saab, many of the long flowing gowns were either completely covered in sequins and beading or embellished at the waist, bust-line or sleeve.
Who wore it best? Berenice Bejo, Octavia spencer, Wendi Mclendon Covey, Katy Perry, Sofia Vergara, Guiliana Rancic were among those embracing the trend, careful to have a minimalist approach on accessories to let the gown do the talking.

5. Big Statement Earrings:

The A list seemed to be dripping with the most spectacular jewels, especially on their ears. As throughout the whole awards season statement earrings were in abundance from gold and emerald drops, to diamond embellished studs and chandelier style.
Top Marks To: Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Virginia Madsden, Rose Byrne, Busy Phillips, Maria Menounos were fans of this beautiful trend.

6. Long Sleeves:

Whether sheer or structured, full length sleeves made a statement on the red carpet for a touch of old Hollywood and quite reminiscent of Hilary Swank in that navy Guy Laroche a couple of years ago– or perhaps just a good option beat the chill!
The Winners: Nominee Berenice Bejo in mint, Shaliene Woodley, Anna Paquin, Elizabeth Banks, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, and Jennifer Lopez opted for full sleeves.

7. Sheer elements:

It looks like the sheer trend is here to stay! Sheer detailing has subtle sex appeal, leaving just enough to the imagination on necklines, sleeves and hemlines alike. Sheer details play up the drama of the dress, being eye-catching without being over the top. We Love: Kate Bosworth, Emma Stone (at the Vanity Fair party), Elizabeth Banks, Ginnifer Goodwin and Zoe Saldana brought the drama.

8. Plunging necklines:

Cleavage alert! A trend that constantly makes it’s way back on the red carpet is the daring and sultry, plunging neckline headlined by Jennifer Lopez, Rooney Mara and Nina Dobrev in an eye-catching and tasteful manner. These ladies proved why the trend is never far from red carpet glamour.

9. One-shoulder-drape over arm:

The cousin of the one-shoulder trend, the one-shoulder-drape over the arm gives the strapless dress that little bit extra and gives a fun and flirty vibe.
Rocking this look: Missi Pyle, Stacy Keibler and Kate Mara each had a different version to suit their red carpet gowns.
