It’s not just Hollywood that gets all the glitz and glamour of awards season, Australia’s own AACTA awards brought the creme of the crop from Aussie film and television to the Red Carpet, and in style! Never heard of the AACTA’s? They are formerly known as the AFI awards except the awards now involve television. It’s like the Golden Globes Down Under! Check out the full list of winners from the ceremony.
While Red Dog might have dominated the local box office last night’s rebranded AACTA Awards there were a few surprises at the awards show.
Snowtown, a low-budget look at South Australia’s infamous bodies in barrels murders,cleaned up with four film AACTAs, awarded by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts, including best director for Justin Kurzel.
Newcomer Daniel Henshall beat Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush (The Eye of the Storm), two-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (The Hunter) and three-time AFI winner David Wenham (Oranges and Sunshine) for best actor. Co-star Louise Harris, who also made her feature film debut in Snowtown, won best supporting actress.
Veteran Australian actress Judy Davis won best actress for her brittle performance in The Eye of the Storm and Hugo Weaving won best supporting actor for Oranges and Sunshine. The Slap television mini-series took out some big awards on the night, winning five AACTAs, including best telefeature or mini-series, best actor (Alex Dimitriades), best director (Matthew Saville) and best screenplay (Brendan Cowell).
Asher Keddie won the Switched On audience choice award for best performance in a television drama for Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo and Seven’s Packed to the Rafters won was the people’s favourite for best television drama
