Diamonds were definitely a girl’s best friend at the 2012 Academy Awards, with the majority of A-listers opting for the sparklers over colourful gems and stones.
Susie Stenmark, founder and creative director of STENMARK jewellery, says the mantra for celebrities at this year’s Oscars was to be simple and streamlined.
There was movement away from statement earrings to the wrist, where diamond cuffs became the focal point.
“A cuff always spells glamour”, noted the former model and TV presenter, who has honed her eye working for luxury companies, including ‘Vogue’, ‘Four Seasons Hotels’ and ‘Chanel’.
“These are not link bracelets but solid cuffs, a strong piece, wide enough so it becomes almost the only piece needed,” she added.
Here, Stenmark shares who rocked their rocks the best on the Oscars red carpet:
“Gwyneth Paltrow, wearing one diamond cuff, a few large diamond rings and looking incredible in Tom Ford.”
“Jessica Chastain and Viola Davis, each sporting a wide diamond cuff.”
“Cameron Diaz in a graduated baguette diamond Tiffany & Co. necklace. Magnificent and simple, to go with her nude strapless Gucci dress.”
“Milla Jovovich went for a strong earring, wearing beautiful diamond drops and a diamond bracelet.”
“Michelle Williams added a diamond bow brooch to her waist, off-centre, a perfect finish to her ruffled and tiered tangerine red Louis Vuitton gown.”
“Williams, along with Penelope Cruz and Natalie Portman, concentrated on the dazzle effect of an outstanding necklace. Cruz also accessorised with outstanding statement earrings in a 40s or 50s cluster spray, which suddenly look modern again after years of the chandelier earring.”
“Emma Stone wore a very strong, wide black and white diamond bracelet with curvilinear links, which was animated when she used her arms and hands a lot on stage as a presenter.”
“Tina Fey was one of the few examples of coloured gems on the night. She wore what looked to be emerald and amethyst chandelier earrings plus a large emerald bombe style ring.”
But it was Angelina Jolie who was Stenmark’s standout of the evening.
“Her diamond earrings appeared to be old mine cut, or Indian polki cut, and were set so they trembled like large drops of water on her earlobes. She sported a diamond solitaire ring on her right hand and a diamond waist ornament, which was a clever addition to her Versace dress.”
And before the Awards were even over, her leg had its own Twitter feed and Facebook fan page!
Stenmark, however, says the absence of richly hued stones on the red carpet left a few outfits and complexions rather lacklustre.

Olivar Musson, from illustrious Australian jewellery company, Musson Jewellers, is a fan of the classic look adopted by Milla Jovovich and Natalie Portman.
“Simple elegant white diamond drop earrings for Milla and Natalie, and although Milla left out the diamond collier Natalie sported, she accessorised with an oversized cushion cut diamond ring with white diamond surround,” the designer admired.
Musson said the understated style from the Oscars can be easily adapted to looks off the red carpet.
“Although we lacked colourful gems this year, we at home were spoiled by the simplicity of the designs. We may not all have access to oversized diamonds or heritage colliers but we can match the simple elegance of most of the looks.”
