Meet Dr Glen Calderhead
Doctor Calderhead is the man you want on speed dial when you face a beauty dilemma. Dr Calderhead is a man of science and is a world expert on lasers in biomedicine and phototherapy (light therapy).
RESCU: Dr Calderhead, tell us about the history of light therapy in medicine and cosmetics.
Dr Glen Calderhead: “6000 years ago, the Egyptians treated vitelego by rubbing skin with compressed parsley and sat in the sun. The burns caused skin pigmentation that evened out where the vitelego had been. Greeks treated ‘melancholy’ with sun exposure and in 1898, Neil Finsen of Denmark created the first electric powered photo therapy machine.”
RESCU: What are the more modern applications of light therapy?
Dr Glen Calderhead: “In medicine, blue light has been used to treat jaundiced babies to treat yellowness and SAD (seasonal affect disorder) is treated by red light treatments, which help regulate melatonin production. With the invention of the Patterson Lamp, non melanoma skin cancers showed an improvement in skin texture and quality.”
RESCU: We love how light therapy can help with severe Acne. What’s the science behind this?
Dr Glen Calderhead: “The combination of Red and Blue light treatment helps balance oxidisation of melanin and also kills bacteria. This treatment can be beneficial to all types of acne.”
RESCU: What is the best course of treatment?
Dr Glen Calderhead: “The ideal Omnilux light therapy course for Acne is 20 minutes of blue light followed by 20 minutes of red light 2-4 days after the treatment. This course should be repeated over four weeks to give a total of 8 treatments.”
RESCU: Is there anyone who can’t have this treatment?
