The field of dermatology has experienced remarkable changes over the past five years, driven by technology, consumer demands, and scientific advancements. At the 2024 Non-Surgical Symposium (NSS), Dr. Liz Dawes Higgs, a Dermatologist specialising in women’s health and a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel, shared her perspectives on these innovations and the growing focus on women’s dermatological health and technology to enhance medicine.
Holistic Approach to Skin Health
Dr. Dawes Higgs discussed the shift in dermatology from merely treating skin conditions to promoting overall skin health.
“We realise that skin is not just about conditions; it’s about skin health, prevention, and incorporating beauty,” she noted.
This comprehensive approach aims to enhance confidence and quality of life by addressing not only the symptoms but also the underlying health of the skin.
Dermatology and Women’s Health
One of the significant shifts in dermatology is the increased focus on women’s health, particularly hormonal health. Dr. Dawes Higgs highlighted that most dermatologists are now women, which has helped bring attention to issues like perimenopause and menopause. “Most Dermatologists are now women and so we are leading by example,” she explained. This change has fostered a more holistic approach, considering factors such as age, culture, and societal influences on women’s skin health.
Hormonal changes during menopause can significantly impact skin health, leading to dryness, thinning, and increased susceptibility to damage. Dr. Dawes Higgs discussed the importance of addressing these issues, reassuring women that they can and should seek help from their dermatologists to learn of the multi modality approaches that may be appropriate for them.
Uncomfortable and Intimate Conversations
Dr. Dawes Higgs also brought attention to the often-overlooked area of female genital dermatology. Conditions affecting the vulva, such as lichen sclerosus, can cause severe discomfort and significantly impact a woman’s quality of life. She stressed the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment, which can dramatically improve symptoms and prevent complications. “One simple cream and a diagnosis can change a woman’s life,” she explained, highlighting the effectiveness of topical steroid treatments for such conditions.
Furthermore, she addressed the issue of cosmetic concerns and the impact of social media and pornography on women’s perceptions of their bodies. Many women suffer from anxiety about the appearance of their vulvas due to unrealistic standards. Dr. Dawes Higgs reassured that there is no one “normal” vulva and that variations are entirely natural. “Women don’t see other women’s vulvas, so there’s a lot of anxiety around not looking pristine,” she noted.
Innovations in Dermatology
In addition to her focus on women’s health, Dr. Dawes Higgs discussed several innovations in dermatology that excite her. These include advancements in laser technology, skin care formulations, and treatments for conditions like acne. She highlighted the importance of personalised treatment plans and the growing array of options available to patients. “We are always enhancing our knowledge and education,” she said, highlighting the continuous evolution of dermatological practices.
Long are the days of prescribing only compound preparations or sorbolene as Dr Dawes Higgs highlights the area of significant development is the combination of multiple beneficial ingredients into single skincare products, making it easier for patients to maintain comprehensive skincare routines. Dr. Dawes Higgs particularly mentioned her preference for ingredients like niacinamides, retinoids, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid, which play crucial roles in skin health being available across many skincare brands.
Dr. Liz Dawes Higgs’ insights at NSS 2024 underscore the evolving nature of dermatology, with a growing emphasis on women’s health and holistic skin care. By integrating advanced technologies and comprehensive treatment approaches, dermatologists are better equipped than ever to enhance skin health and improve the quality of life for their patients.
