Strewth! After a successful television career spanning 40 years, Ray Meagher has finally won a Gold Logie for his portrayal of the lovable Alf Stewart on Home and Away.
The veteran actor pipped Packed to the Rafters star Rebecca Gibney to the post to take home the coveted Gold Logie last night.
An emotional and ecstatic Meagher accepted his award with a sentimental speech: “These things have never meant much to me over the years, really, mainly because I’ve never held one,” he said.
“All of a sudden they seem unbelievably important.” He continued.
Rebecca Gibney scored the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress for her work in popular television series Packed to the Rafters, of which she described starring in the drama felt like being with her ‘own family’.
Packed to the Rafters also took home the highly coveted Most Popular Drama Series award, while Shaun Micallef and his show Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation tied with the family drama in taking home the most trophies.
Returning to host Australian Television’s night of nights for the first time in 17 years, Bert Newton received a standing ovation from the audience upon gracing the stage.
Newton delivered a series of quips, including the line “It’s time for a commercial break. Here’s Moira,” to hearty audience laughter.
However, towards the end of the evening, Bert put all jokes aside to deliver touching tributes to Don Lane and Brian Naylor.
On the red carpet front, best dressed celebs included Nicki Phillips, who looked stunning in her flesh toned Lisa Ho Gown, Jessica Marais in a sweeping floor length J’Aton dress and Esther Anderson in her soft peach Grecian-style Lisa Ho one shouldered gown.
Silver Logie winner Claudia Karvan had an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, when her breast accidentally popped out from her chic black low-cut dress as she posed for photographers. On the upside though, the actress wowed us all with her stunning old-Hollywood-esque hair and makeup complete with bold red lip.
However unfortunately that wasn’t Karvan’s only ‘slip’ of the night, the Saved actress also made headlines when she dropped an ‘f-bomb’ while accepting her award later in the evening. A red-faced Karvan later explained to the media “I’ve obviously drunk too much.”
