Fashion Wrap: Lady Gaga Goes American Gothic, Andrej Pejic Makes A Splash In NYMag and More!

Lady Gaga In You & I Video: American Gothic Plus Couture

After her last, stripped-back 80s video Edge Of Glory, Lady Gaga’s newest effort for You & I incorporates her now-legendary sky-high shoes, plentiful couture, references to Frankenstein and country music, and herself as a mermaid.

The fashion industry is, typically, both confused and titillated by her latest work, which uses McQueen-inspired dresses (no word yet on which they actually ARE McQueen) and dresses Gaga up in drag.

As we’ve seen from the cover of Vogue Japan Homme, she makes a convincing guy, and is following this season’s trend for boyish chic in her own way.

However, some fashion outlets (Fashionista among them) are arguing that Gaga’s just copying her own looks from the past – nearly every outfit in the video is similar to something she’s worn on concert, in a magazine or on the red carpet.

What do you think – is she going round in circles?

Andrej Pejic Once Faked A Pregnancy ‘For A Joke’

The androgynous, so-hot-right-now Australian model Andrej Pejic has given an interview to NYMag as its latest cover-boy/girl, and reveals some interesting aspects of his life in fashion.

Apparently his transition into modelling in women’s clothes was the idea of Carine Roitfeld, former editor of Vogue, who insisted “Put him in Fendi!”

His mother is also his biggest fan; after he walked the Gaultier catwalk as the show-stopping bride, she told the press he was “the most beautiful girl in a wedding dress I’ll ever see”.

Pejic famously dresses according to his feelings rather than his gender, and – despite some truly stomach-turning transphobia from various men’s publications – is one of the hottest properties in the modelling world.

However, his most infamous prank was faking a pregnancy to fool the press.  He told his agent to tell the press and arrived at Sydney Airport with a foam-filled ‘bump’.  The problem?  He was then apprehended by customs police who thought he might be smuggling drugs.

Cynthia Rowley For Roxy

This season neoprene is the newest big material to make a splash – so to speak – and popular beach fashion label has brought designer Cynthia Rowley on board to work her magic with it.

The result?  A capsule line of wetsuits which look more high-fashion than hit-the-waves.

With space-age lines, unusual brief cuts to suit all body shapes, and rich intense colour blocking (another of the season’s trends), the wetsuits are guaranteed to be a hit among fashion-conscious surfer girls this season.

One fan Roxy and Rowley perhaps wish they didn’t have?  Lindsay Lohan, who was pictured in two of the collaboration’s wetsuits surfing for a photoshoot for Love Cat Magazine this week, in full makeup, while puffing on a cigarette.

This was perhaps not the image of health and exercise they were willing to project.

Designers Plus Yachts: The Ultimate Luxury At Audi Hamilton Island Race Week

The yachting fraternity sure knows how to live the good life- they’ve invited Collette Dinnigan to launch her 2011 Cruise Collection on Hamilton Island, MC’d by Megan Gale, during the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week.

There will also be a white tie Moet & Chandon luncheon, and other fashion parades by Little Joe and Henri Lloyd.

It’s one of the most elite races in the Australian yachting calendar, but the celebrity invitees – from Gale to Geoff Huegill – may be more focussed on luxury fashion than seeing the yacht Wild Oats or examining the America’s Cup.

If this is the good life, Rescu. certainly approves.  The Race Week is from 19-27 August – we’ll bring you all the gossip from the event.

Lingerie Line For Children Causes Scandal

Cue pearl-clutching: a French lingerie line has released a line of “loungerie” for 4-12 year olds, and the accompanying photoshoot has raised a few eyebrows.

Loungerie is not sexually inspired lingerie, the firm Jours Apres Lunes insists, but designed to be worn around the house, casually, over or under clothes, in comfortable materials.

However, consumer watchdogs have received complaints over the advertisements, which feature made-up young girls on beds clutching teddy bears while in lingerie-approximating ensembles.

None of the girls are posed provocatively, and the line is unrepentant, insisting that it’s innocent fun.

What do you think?

Vivienne Westwood’s Handbag Line For African Charity

Fancy doing something fashionable for charity?  Get your hands on one of Vivienne Westwood’s new handbags.

The fiestiest grand dame in all of British fashion – who recently made headlines for calling Duchess Kate’s eyeliner ‘hard’ – has collaborated with the UN’s Ethical Fashion Programme to produce handbags in Nairobi, Kenya.

The colourful bags are all made by vulnerable Kenyan women who use the wages to make a living and support themselves above subsistence level.  They’re also 100% recycled.

Ethical fashion certainly seems popular – the bags sold out within minutes of appearing in her store.

And the advertising campaign, shot by Jurgen Teller, shows Dame Westwood at her most flamboyant.  Good to know some things don’t change.
