How to Detox after the Easter Sugar Binge

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

If you awoke after the Easter long weekend amongst a confetti of torn foil wrappers and contemplating the best way to hoist yourself back onto the health horse, there’s only one thing for it: A Cleanse! And now is the perfect time to commence. The seasons are blending seamlessly from Summer to Autumn and our bodies crave warmer, more nourishing fare. By cleansing as the seasons shift, we prime our immune systems and pave the way for a healthy, rosy-cheeked winter. Simply cleanse for a week to regroup and realign with balanced health. Let naturopath Anthia Koullouros guide the way.

Regrouping after a holiday splurge is as easy as devising a whole foods shopping list, restocking your fridge and pantry with fresh produce and eating your way to health.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail; prepare to cleanse by stocking up on the following wholefoods:

– Pastured or grass fed beef, lamb, chicken and pork or Wild or non-farmed fish and seafood – 1 serve per day
– Pastured eggs – 1-2 per day
– Organic fruit – 1 -2 serves per day
– Organic vegetables – 2 serves per day
– Organic fresh and dried herbs and spices
– Fats and oils – animal and plant sources e.g. olive oil, ghee, coconut oil.
– Cultured foods: yoghurt or lacto-fermented vegetables
– Hydrating fluids:
Broths and Soups made from pastured bone stocks (1 bowl or 2 cups per day)
Herbal teas (3-4 cups per day)
Filtered tap or Spring water (3-4 cups per day)
– Some nuts, seeds and beans – well prepared (soaked, activated or sprouted)
– Some well prepared psuedocereals such as quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth and whole grains such as wild/organic rice

Other: dried seaweed, psyllium husks or slippery elm, desiccated coconut and apple cider vinegar

Avoid: sugar, yeast, caffeine, alcohol and additives

General detox support: My Naturopathic recommendations

– Organic Essential Oil: Fennel, Sage, Vetiver, Ylang ylang, Juniper, Geranium and Cypress help promote clarity, motivation, courage, comfort, harmony and confidence in a bath or vaporizer.
– Organic Herbal Tea: Dandelion root, Dandelion leaf, Burdock, Calendula, Milk thistle seed, Globe artichoke leaf.
– Herbal Tincture: Rosemary, Dandelion root, St Mary’s Thistle, Pau d’arco.
– Specific Food for Detox: Each day consume a raw or cooked garlic clove, carrot, celery, globe artichoke, steamed bitter greens with lashings of olive oil and lemon juice and Psyllium husk powder (to cleanse the bowels).
– Heel Homoeopathic Remedy: Nux vom Accord and Lymphostat.
– Australian Bush Flower Essence: Purifying • Bach Flower Remedy: Crab Apple
– Schuessler Tissue Salt: Combination 12

Sugar craving support – My Naturopathic recommendations

– Organic Herbal Tea: Licorice root, Lemon myrtle, Rose, Lemongrass, Ginger, Vanilla
– Herbal tincture: Gymnema, Horopito • Australian Bush Flower Essence: Calm & Clear
– Bach flower Remedy: Agrimony
– Schuessler Tissue Salt: Combination 5

Note:

Schuessler Tissue Salt: Tissue Salts are specially prepared micro-doses of the body’s 12 essential minerals. These minerals are important for the functioning and health of the body; if deficiency or imbalance occurs, common ailments or illness may result.
Heel Homoeopathic Remedies: A range of German products that work effectively for symptom relief. See your practitioner for a prescription.
Herbal Tinctures: Concentrated herbs in a liquid form and are only available with a prescription from your Naturopath or Herbalist.

Regrouping after a holiday splurge is as easy as devising a whole foods shopping list (or using mine above – even simpler!), restocking your fridge and pantry with an abundance of fresh, vibrant produce and eating your way to health!
