Fashion Wrap: ASOS Comes To Australia, Vogue Features Controversial ‘Slave Earrings’ And More!

ASOS Coming To Australia- Finally

It’s every Australian online shopper’s dream come true – ASOS is finally opening an Australian website.

The online fashion and beauty magnate is one of the most popular sites for affordable fashion in the world, rivalling Net-A-Porter.  It’s British originally, but now has outlets in France, Germany and the US.

It’s aimed at fashion-forward 16-34 year olds – the chic, the classic and the edgy all at once.  Never seen ASOS before?  Go check out their British website and browse the racks to get style inspiration.

And the best part?  Free shipping.

It’s where a lot of big brands get the bulk of their business – and now you can have a slice of the pie.  Rev up your credit cards, Australian shoppers: ASOS will be arriving soon.

Vogue Under Fire For ‘Slave’ Jewellery

Vogue’s numerous magazines have had several scandals recently, as Rescu. has documented – but this one is causing even more ripples.

A pair of hoop earrings shown on Vogue Italia’s website are described in the description as “slave earrings”.

The blurb says, “If the name brings to mind the decorative tradition of the women of colour who were brought to the southern United States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom.”

The backlash has begun in earnest, describing the whole episode as classless, racist and very naive at best, but as of publication Vogue Italia’s website and description remain intact.

Would you wear anything described as ‘slave jewellery’?

Kim Kardashian Weds In Vera Wang, Lindsay Lohan Turns Up In A Wedding Dress

Thanks to her exclusive $1.5million deal with People Magazine, nobody is going to get a look at Kim Kardashian’s wedding dress before it’s all revealed on paper.

It was Vera Wang, strapless, and had an intricate laced bodice- but that’s all we know.  We also know that her maids of honour, Kourtney and Khloe, also wore white – and that the whole wedding’s theme was white-and-black.

However, it was Lindsay Lohan who managed to steal the show, by appearing at the wedding in a deeply low-cut white jewelled dress which could have doubled as a wedding gown on its own.

Lohan, who once dabbled as a designer for Ungaro with disastrous results, published photos of herself in the gown before going to the wedding.

Would you wear something bridal-adjacent to a friend’s wedding?

The New Trend: Celebrity-Designed Shoes

Ever heard of Stuart Weitzman?  Soon you will.

He’s just convinced four starlets in Hollywood and New York – Scarlett Johansson, Hayden Panettiere, Michelle Trachtenberg and Olivia Palermo (who’s not a starlet but is very fashion-conscious nonetheless) – to design a shoe in collaboration with his label.

They’ll be called the Young Hollywood Cares collection, and will benefit research into ovarian cancer.

The four shoes are very different, and each girl has made her own aesthetic stamp.  Palermo’s is a pink feathery stiletto; Panettiere chose a very simple platform black bootie; Trachtenberg used denim and sequins; and Johansson’s effort is vintage-chic with laces.

Want to get your hands on these pieces?  You’ll need to pay up to $US500.

Buy A Thakoon Scarf To Help Somalian Famine Victims

Want to do good while looking good?

Thakoon, the young designer beloved by Anna Wintour, has launched a new scarf to help Somalian famine relief.

100% of the proceeds will go to various aid charities.  The print itself, Thakoon Paninchgul explains, is a traditional Masai print.

His main concern, he says, is “for the children affected”.  It’s a noble cause, and one which fashionistas should get behind.  Visit thakoon.com for the scarf, which is $US250.
