A new venue, being Carriageworks and the sound of stilettos on the concrete floors set the tone for day 1 of MBFWA as many fashionistas flocked to see what was hot this season for Australia.
With Beauty being such a link and an accessory to fashion, it is only fair that I bring to you the highlights and my personal fave looks of the day and from nude to wow, we saw it all on Day 1.
Camilla and Marc and Christopher Esber both choosing quite an on trend look of that barely there makeup with nude tones in slate/taupe shades, from Napoleon Perdis, giving each model a contoured look for shape and letting the fashion do all the talking. Each look had very clean skin with a fresh approach and simple shading to create any effect of lift that you can see.
I was then so excited to learn that the White Sands show had bought on board a makeup brand, Erin Bigg cosmetics, founded by Brisbane Makeup Artist Erin Bigg and only launched her range 6 weeks ago – what a launch party being at fashion week! The products looked great and I cannot wait to try these new toys out as I was inspired by the end look created by makeup director Mia Connor. The eye was the entire focus of this look and worked well with the simplicity of swimwear and the almost fluffy bouncy waves from Redken.
Check out this fab smokey, winged eye from the White Sands show!
My attention was then switched to Bobbi Brown, where to me I have always thought of being a beautiful complexion brand with stunning nude tones as there feature, so I was excited to see them spice it up a bit with pops of colour on the eye at the Roopa Pemmaraju show.
Makeup Director Alphie SadSad, was having a lot of fun with this look, still creating beautiful skin keeping the look fresh, but adding colour in shades like yellow, blue and green into the inner socket of the eye, blending softy into the eyes crease area. Alphie stated he wanted to incorporate the fab colours in Roopa’s designs, see below;
I am a big fan of a good highlight and shade, my whole art of makeup artistry is based on contouring and boy did I get that with Napoleon Perdis for Alex Perry! A very sculpted, defined, but in nude tones look was created showing off very lifted eyes and high cheekbones, but still keeping the look fresh.
The colours used were not as flat or stone like as in earlier shows which matched the very new style of design for Alex Perry and the words ‘Sport Luxe’ was mentioned backstage from Napoleon and he certainly delivered a modern and chic look for that suited the collection very well. Some new products were introduced, my favourite being the New Auto Pilot Radiance Boosting Primer, loved the skin!
Take a Look;
M.A.C closed Day 1 with a futuristic edge for by johhny and a candyland of colour and creativity with Romance was Born – looked like too much fun at that backstage!
Nicole Thompson lead the team at M.A.C for by johnny and it was all about the eye as she described how she mixed silver and platinum pigment with fix + to create almost a creamy metallic texture to give a strong back to the future eye!
Teamed with a bold, ‘Handsome Brow’ as she described, this look almost was a bit 90’s with the metallic silver and the thicker brow joining as one for the one bold statement. Clear lip gloss was then applied over the entire eyelid to really capture the light during the show – wow! All other tones were that of a stone like, mushroom shade for contour and also the lip kept in the same tone to really keep focus on that eye.
How cool is this look;
Last but definitely not least, what a way to finish Day 1, we had the famous and ever so creative Val Garland from create a fun candy land, ‘sweet shop’ inspired playground of colour and glitter for Romance was Born!
Backstage was so fun, colourful and literally another world of makeup from M.A.C.
Val Garland is known for her amazing creativity and seeing it live was incredible,
Her ‘sweet shop’ themed looks were from glitter, to bold artistic designs to colour washing across the lids and more…
This is how much colour we are talking;
Definitely a makeup playground!
Glitter was slightly blown onto faces while models wore garbage bags…
But the finals looks being like a fantasy of colour, and Val used the words of ‘Breathe of Fresh Air and Dolly Daydreams’ to describe some of the looks with the clothes, the hair and makeup all tying in together.
Take a look at these creative pieces of work – well done Val!
What a way to finish day 1which started out so nude and colourless to the total opposite with a playground of colour – It is great to see makeup not being so safe and bringing creativity back to the runway!
*My most wearable look of the day goes to Alex Perry, love how chic it looked!
See you all at Day 2!
