While the world of pop music was being celebrated in LA, London was celebrating the film awards at the annual British Academy Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) at the Royal Opera House.

Despite the horrific weather, the stars frocked up, got out their umbrellas and braved the red carpet ahead the ceremony which is largely touted as a precursor to the Oscars.
Ben Affleck was the man of the moment, taking out the Best Director and Best Film Awards for Argo. These were just one in a series of awards Affleck has taken out for the film, cementing that the Academy had it wrong when they snubbed Affleck of a Best Director nomination. For the past four years in a row, the BAFTAs have picked the same best film as the Oscars so Argo is the absolute front-runner to take out the Best Picture Award at the Academy Awards.
Hugh Jackman, who was nominated for his part in Les Miserables, unfortunately missed out on the Best Actor BAFTA, but Daniel-Day Lewis took it out for his part in Lincoln.
Les Miserables was not without its fair share of awards though. The film took out Best Production Design, Sound, Make-up and Hair and Jackman’s co-star Anne Hathaway managed to score a gong for her portrayal of Fantine in Les Miserables, amping up the Oscars buzz around her star. During her speech she paid tribute to Jackman saying, “I’ve run out of superlatives for you, man – you’re the best.”
The 85-year-old star of Amour, Emmanuelle Riva, beat Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard and a pink-haired Helen Mirren to the Best Actress award.
With the BAFTAs done and dusted, it’s time to hedge your bets for the Oscars!
