Don’t have the time or resources to invest in intensive, top-notch skincare? No problem! The building blocks of good skin lie in the basics. Safeguard the skin you’re in by incorporating these simple skincare basics into your beauty routine…
1. Cleanse
Simplicity is key when it comes to a daily cleanser. You don’t want to use anything too harsh, that’s going to strip your skin, or interfere with the skin’s natural PH balance. The purpose of cleansing is to remove dirt, debris, excess oils, bacteria and make-up and let your pores breathe–however, cleansing once a day, before bed is sufficient. While it’s best to determine your skin type first–dry skin? Oily? Combination? And pick a cleanser accordingly–the best advice for all skin types when it comes to a cleanser, is to stick to a mild, soap-free formulation such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser RRP $7.60 (also available in Oily Skin formulation) Available at Pharmacies, or a mild, nourishing cleansing oil such as Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil 200ml RRP $60. Available at selected Myer and David Jones stores nationally.
2. Exfoliate
Exfoliation sloughs off dead cells from the skin’s surface, revealing fresh, new skin cells. Over time, regular exfoliation will increase the skin’s capacity to absorb moisture, reduce the appearance of scarring and fine lines and keep skin looking fresh and radiant. Just don’t overdo it or you can tear, or damage the epidermis of the skin. As a guide, the finer the exfoliation granules, the safer it is to use on your skin. We love ASAP Daily Exfoliating Facial Scrub RRP $29.00 Stockists Ph. 1300 131 970 and St Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub RRP $9.95 Available at Priceline and Pharmacies– for their gentle yet effective formulations. We recommend using these every 3 days, or if you’re using a coarser scrub–once per week will suffice.
3. Moisturise
Moisturising the skin daily, is an essential step in good skin care. A good moisturiser will keep skin supple, soft, and help to reduce the damaging effects of free-radicals, allowing the skin cells to function as they should. Tip: As each new season rolls around, your skin requirements change, so in winter, you’ll need a more intensive, nourishing moisturiser to combat dry skin, and in summer, you’ll require something more lightweight, and oil free to prevent clogged pores.
We love Garnier Skin Naturals Ultra Lift Day Cream SPF 15 RRP $16.95 and Avene Skin Recovery Cream RRP $33.95 available at pharmacies.
4. Facials
If you’re lucky enough to be able to make some time for yourself once a month to pop out and get a professional facial–please do! Besides the fact they are incredibly pampering and uber-relaxing, they also include a skin consultation by a trained beauty therapist, who can determine exactly what your skin needs, whether that be hydration, exfoliation, detoxification or all of the above. Can’t find the time for a professional facial? Indulge in one of these amazing revitalising at-home facial masks.
5. Sunscreen
Last (but CERTAINLY) not least, the final step in your basic beauty routine is to slap on some sunscreen–every single day. To prevent the dangerous, damaging effects of daily UV exposure, that can lead to skin cancer, pigmentation, premature ageing, and hardening of the skin, always apply a daily facial sunscreen such as the matte-finish, oil-free SunSense Daily Face SPF 30+ Invisible Tint Finish Sunscreen RRP $13.99 Available at pharmacies and Priceline stores nationally.
