The Healing Waters: Timeless Wellness Practice Of Bathing At Aurora Bathhouse

Lyndall Mitchell’s extensive experience in the wellness industry, enriched by her pioneering work at Australia’s first health retreat, laid the foundation for Aurora Spa 27 years ago in Melbourne’s St Kilda and the Aurora Bathhouse nestled beside the beautiful Art Deco Intercontinental Hotel Sorrento. “It was through seeing the guests that were having trouble integrating it into their world that planted the seed for me,” Lyndal reflects. This realisation birthed a sanctuary where the rejuvenative power of bathing could support continuous wellness. “Wellness is very much about how you’re integrating this into your life for the long term,” she explains.

The Transformative Journey Through Aurora Bathhouse

Lyndall has designed each phase of the bathing ritual to guide guests through a holistic journey of renewal and relaxation. The meticulously curated journey allows each stage to connect the ancient tradition of bathing with modern wellness science and impeccable design elements.

Cleansing Ritual: The experience begins with an invigorating cleansing ritual using Australian sea salt and grapefruit body cleanser. “This first step enhances lymphatic drainage and boosts circulation, setting the tone for the entire experience,” explains Lyndall. The ritual is designed to detoxify the body and awaken the senses, preparing guests for the immersive journey ahead.

Daydream Pools: Guests then ease into the Daydream pools, where water enriched with magnesium offers deep relaxation beneath soothing skylights. “Magnesium is crucial for relaxing muscles and promoting a deep sense of calm,” notes Lyndal. 

Thermal Transitions: The journey continues with a transition through varying temperatures, which Lyndal describes as essential for stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. “From the cold plunge that invigorates the nervous system to the reflexology pool that stimulates key points in the feet, each element is designed to energise and revitalise,” she says.

Vitality and Serenity: In the vitality pool, guests enjoy therapeutic water massages that soothe sore muscles and reduce stress. “The swan neck massage fountains are a guest favourite, providing deep tissue relief,” . Following this, the Nordic sauna and aromatic steam room offer a purifying heat that cleanses the skin and lungs, enhancing overall well-being.

Sensory Immersion: The final stage of the journey involves a sensory immersion in the glacial mist room and a therapeutic rest in the salt inhalation room. “The glacial mist room, designed to mimic the refreshing chill of an alpine breeze, complements the warmth of the sauna, balancing the body’s temperatures,” explains Lyndall. Meanwhile, the salt room offers a moment of respiratory relief, where guests inhale micro-particles of pharmaceutical-grade salt. “This is particularly beneficial for clearing the airways and enhancing lung capacity,” she adds.

Through this carefully curated journey, Aurora Bathhouse not only revitalises the body but also restores the mind, offering a serene escape from the daily grind. Lyndall’s dedication to combining traditional bathing rituals with scientific insights ensures that each guest’s experience is both therapeutic and transformative.

“Science unlocks nature,” she says, pointing to research validating the long-known benefits of these practices. Bathing rituals, deeply embedded in many cultures, from the onsens of Japan to the Nordic saunas, offer a rich tapestry of health benefits recognized worldwide.

Reflecting on the global traditions of bathing, Mitchell shares stories of guests who find a piece of home in Aurora’s offerings. “One of our guests brought her homesick Italian husband here, and he was moved, saying it’s exactly what they do weekly back in Italy,” she shares. This cultural connection underscores bathing not just as a luxury but as an essential part of social and health practices across the world.

Bringing Aurora Home

Lyndal offers practical advice for integrating elements of the Aurora experience into daily life, advocating for simple at-home practices like hot and cold showers to enhance circulation and dry exfoliation to stimulate the skin. “Adding magnesium salts to your bath can help with muscle relaxation and overall detoxification,” she advises. She emphasises creating a serene bathing environment to mirror the mindful experience of Aurora, suggesting, “Most importantly, not having your phone near the bath so that you are tuning in.”

Aurora Bathhouse is more than a place; it’s a movement back to grounded, essential wellness practices. It invites us to slow down, embrace self-care, and integrate wellness into our lives—reconnecting with the ancient wisdom of water’s healing power.
