Since 2002, Chanel has been holding their incredible Métiers d’Art show to showcase master craftmanship. This year the show draws past inspiration from Byzantium, Shaghai and Moscow, whisking us away to an India dripping with opulence. Karl Lagerfeld described the show as “ a concept of India. More CHANEL than India. The Parisian version of an India that doesn’t exist.”
Such an exotic, lavish show requires only the most fabulous make-up. With jewel-buttons, jeweled bindis adorning model’s foreheads, splashes of hot pink, leather thigh-high boots and some of the most luxurious silks in the world, Creative Director of Chanel Makeup Peter Philips had quite a task ahead of him. We found out what inspired Philips and how he created such an incredible beauty look.
Peter Philips: We wanted to create an almond-shaped black kohl eye. A graphic interpretation of the iconic Indian beauty ideal. Something between mysterious and rock’n’roll.
Peter Philips:
I kept the focus on the eyes. I achieved a matte pitch-black makeup result by using a new shade of Illusion d’Ombre called “Nirvana”. I used Le Crayon Khôl – Black on the eyes and Mascara Inimitable Intense -Black on the lashes. For skin I used Perfection Lumière.
For the cheeks I used a touch of Joues Contraste – Brume d’Or . On the lips, I applied Rouge Coco Shine -Empreinte for a natural dewy lip.
Last minute I added some golden highlights on the cheeks and the eyes with Route des Indes de CHANEL, a limited edition pallet that I specially created for this show.
For the nails I created a new light golden shade called Le Vernis – Diwali as homage to the famous “Festival of lights” that takes place in India.
