Beauty Brands Making Sustainable Moves

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

Sustainability is more than a buzzword on Rescu. We have a dedicated sustainability section in all our pillars of Style, Substance and Success to help you make more informed and sustainable steps every day. Here are three major companies in the beauty industry who have taken initiatives to improve their environmental and ethical impact.

Aveda x Take 3 For The Sea

Eco haircare and skincare brand Aveda is partnering with Take 3 for the sea, an award-winning and celebrated leader in sustainability, with a mission to reduce global plastic pollution through education that inspires participation. The non-profit organisation, headquartered on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia, aims to increase participation in simple actions to reduce waste and plastic pollution.

Their simple call to action encourages individuals to Take 3 pieces of rubbish before leaving the beach, waterway or wherever you happen to be travelling through. The global #Take3fortheSea movement has recorded participation in 129 countries and removes over 10 million pieces of rubbish from the environment every year.

The official partnership launched this month with an initiative on Clean Up Australia Day with AVEDA teams, salons and guests, including Take 3 ambassadors Kyal and Kara Demmrich and AVEDA partner Jesinta Franklin, travelling to beaches in Sydney, Byron Bay, Melbourne and Perth to remove as much rubbish as possible.

As part of this initiative, Aveda have designed a trio of scrunchies made sustainably from post-consumer recycled plastics, which can be purchased online or at Aveda salons. 100% of profits from these scrunchies will support Take 3’s mission to protect oceans and reduce plastic pollution.

Garnier is officially Cruelty Free

Garnier has announced that all of its products, globally, are now officially certified cruelty free under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny programme. The stamp of approval has been awarded by the leading organisation working to end animal testing and the cruelty free gold standard.

As a further step in Garnier’s ongoing commitment to working towards a more environmentally friendly planet, which saw the brand launch its ‘Green Beauty’ initiative in 2020, Garnier is one of the largest global brands to receive this approval under the Leaping Bunny programme and it means all Garnier products are officially produced without animal testing involved.

Michelle Thew, Cruelty Free International CEO “Garnier is a global brand familiar to us all. To work with them and declare them officially approved under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny Programme is a real milestone. It has taken many months, but Garnier have diligently reviewed every supplier and source and we are completely confident with the results.”

For Garnier this was a case of securing a declaration from more than 500 suppliers, who source more than 3,000 different ingredients, from across the world.

This announcement from Garnier comes off the back of a landmark year for the brand. In 2020, Garnier announced their Green Beauty initiative, a complete end to end approach to sustainability, transforming every stage of Garnier’s value chain and dramatically reducing the brand’s environmental impact. Find out more about Green Beauty here.

This announcement also comes amidst a wave of new sustainable innovations. Each new product underpins the Green Beauty commitments of the brand, and are now all officially approved by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny programme.

100 years of Weleda

Swiss brand Weleda has always held high regard for sustainability and is the world’s leading manufacturer of certified natural and organic skin care. This year they celebrate 100 years of bringing people healing, well-being and vitality.

Since the company was founded in 1921, Weleda has considered their social, environmental and economic impact in all its business operations. About 78 percent of the raw materials  in their products come from organic or biodynamic farming and from controlled wild collection. They also have a program partnership with Terracycle where products can be recycled or repurposed into new products.

Weleda has recently announced a new skin care range due to launch in May 2021 which contains prickly pear cactus, a hydrating plant extract that strengthens the natural protective layer of the skin and prevents it from drying out. The harvesting process is carefully planned to ensure minimal environmental damage and to ensure the plant is utilised for the best results.

Products include a hydrating facial cream and facial lotion, as well as an eye gel and refreshing facial mist. Each product supports the skins natural barrier function to seal in moisture and ensure long lasting hydration.

Weleda continues to actively strive for biodiversity in their products and are finding ways to reduce their emissions in order to become a carbon neutral company.
