The Best Beauty Basics

By Kimberly Nissen, The Beauty Bandit

Fancy skincare and extravagant makeup can be lots of fun, but every now and then we at Rescu. like to strip back to the bare basics of beauty grooming and hygiene. Today we are sharing our favourite daily-use products.

Providing a refreshing taste and a welcome alternative to mint varieties, this toothpaste includes natural lemon extracts and gently whitens teeth using hydrated silica.

RRP $24 from Mecca Cosmetica.

Dental-grade baking soda is the secret weapon in this toothpaste, getting into all the nooks and crannies of your mouth to lift away stains.

RRP $4.99 from Woolworths, Coles, Priceline and pharmacies.

Escape to that deserted island in a flash with the nectars of peach, plum and blackcurrant entwined with the richness of honey in this divinely sweet combination.

RRP $85 from Jo Malone boutiques and selected David Jones stores. Phone 1800 661 062.

Another holiday-in-a-bottle product is this yummy liquid soap. Coconut Oil and glycerine are combined to effectively cleanse skin in a luxurious lather, without leaving you dried out.

RRP $14.99 from Napoleon Perdis Concept Stores, Target and selected independent stockists.

An ultra rich cream that helps reduce the appearance of visible signs of fatigue whilst maintaining skin’s moisture balance throughout the day. Plus the SPF 15 gives your skin much needed protection from the sun.

RRP $29.95 from Avon. Phone 1800 646 000.

Daily hydration is just one of the perks of this tinted moisturiser. In one handy tube you also get a complexion corrector and illuminator, an acne fighter and the protection of SPF 15. It also works as a great base under make-up, locking in moisture for up to 24 hours.

RRP $13.95 from department stores, supermarkets, variety stores and pharmacies.

Jojoba and shea butter leave lips feeling soft, supple and added tint of pink makes them look healthy, but this lip balm also packs the punch of SPF 30+ zinc oxide, which protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

RRP $38 from David Jones, Myer, Priceline, Terry White and selected pharmacies.

The first ever lip product to contain real silk extracts, the special ingredient is joined by special moisturisers, vitamins A, B5 and E to create a silky texture and leaves lips with a light glossy finish. SPF 15 protection makes it great for daily use.

RRP $3.95 from Priceline and pharmacies.

Designed for all hair types, volume is locked in without weighing down hair. The formula leaves hair feeling soft, and it’s safe for daily use. It is also colour-safe for protecting against fading.

RRP $34 each from Sebastian Professional salons. Phone 1300 728 333.

Hair is gently cleansed, conditioned and strengthen with a hydrating formula free from harsh sulfates. Immediate results are soft and silky hair, and over time hair becomes resistant to breakage.

RRP $12.95 each from department stores, pharmacies and selected variety stores.

Expert Advice

One grooming habit that always seems to be in conflict is whether it is ok to wash your hair everyday. Everyone has an opinion for or against, but we wanted to get the facts from an expert. Brad Ngata, owner and creative director, Brad Ngata Hair Direction tells us the truth.

“Daily shampooing gets a bad rap because it’s seen to be stripping the hair of its natural oils. But if you use a good quality, conditioning shampoo, you’re not going to be doing any damage to your hair by using it every day.

I find that hair styles much better a day or two after washing, so wouldn’t recommend it unless you like to use a lot of product in your hair, or you have fine hair that goes flat and oily after only one day. In both cases you might find that washing every day is necessary. But once you start washing every day, your hair gets used to it and becomes greasier quicker, so it’s a bit of a vicious circle. The key is choosing the right product. Ask your stylist to prescribe you something and tell them you need it for every day use – they’re the expert, so will be able to use their professional opinion to suggest a suitable product.”
