The bedroom is a private space where we should all want to escape, indulge and unwind. To make sure your bedroom is performing in the style stakes, we’ve gathered some expert tips and tricks from interior stylist Deborah Hutton.
RESCU: When dividing the bedroom budget, what are the must buys?
Deborah Hutton: A bedroom needs to be a private sanctuary where you can totally relax and unwind. Therefore comfort is an absolute priority. Spend your budget focusing on beautiful bed linen with a good thread count, duvets and comforters that have a good weight, and blankets, throws and cushions that offer total luxury.
RESCU: How do you set a theme for your room?
Deborah Hutton: Try to determine what you want the focus of the room to be and let it dictate the look. Do you want a stunning design sheet set? Do you want the colour of the room to make an impact? Do you have a fabulous covered chair or a wall painting you’d like to feature? Start with one thing you love and build the room around it, adding the best accessories.
RESCU: How should you use colour?
Deborah Hutton: If you’re thinking about painting your bedroom, keep in mind that soft, soothing, neutral shades are best for sleep, relaxation and to wake up to. Blues and greens are proven to have a calming, gentle effect on the senses and most people sleep better. But if you’re hanging out for fire engine red, can I suggest a compromise? Stick to neutrals like taupe or honey and pick up the cherry red in accent pieces like cushions, throws and the fabric covered placement pieces.
RESCU: Bedrooms aren’t just for relaxing; any tips for seductive styling?
Deborah Hutton: Bringing a romantic edge to the bedroom is as easy as investing in beautiful bedside lamps with no more than 60 watts globes, and if you can’t avoid overhead lighting, install dimmers and buy your favourite scented candle. Pack the clutter way and go for the ‘hotel look’, minimising unwanted stuff that might draw your attention away.
RESCU: For those sharing a bedroom, how can you find a balance?
Deborah Hutton: A bedroom has to offer a compromise of comfort and practicality, not always an easy thing to achieve. If it’s shared, consider your partner and try to find the middle line. Girls: go easy on the pretty/girlie designs; and guys: pick up your clothes!
