Stars like Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, and Hugh Jackman headed to the 65th annual Directors Guild of America Awards ceremony took place on Saturday night.

After sweeping awards at the Golden Globes, the Producer’s Guild Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, all eyes were on Ben Affleck and his film Argo to take a top spot at the Directors Guild Awards over the weekend.
Despite his winning streak, the DGA wasn’t necessarily a shoo-in as Ben was up against big wig directors like Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee. Despite this, he managed to prove himself and take home the biggest award of the night – the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film award. Wife Jennifer Garner was there wearing a white Antonio Berardi frock to support her husband.
This win means interesting things to the Oscars buzz. On the one hand, only one film since 1996 has lost the Oscar Best Picture prize after sweeping the Producers Guild, SAG and DGA awards. However, only one film ever has won Best Picture without taking out the Best Director award and Affleck wasn’t nominated for that award.
Only time will tell!
Lena Dunham also continued her winning streak at the DGAs, taking out the top honour of Director for a Comedy Series for her work on the pilot episode of Girls.
This news comes off the back of an announcement that Lena Dunham is teaming up with Girls executive producer Jenni Konner to create a new HBO show about Betty Halbreich, the legendary Bergdorf Goodman personal shopper.
Halbreich’s upcoming book All Dressed Up and Everywhere To Go has been optioned by the network and has approached Dunham to turn the book into a series.
Despite all this attention, the star remains humble. On the red carpet for the DGAs, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “I will tell you, I’ve now directed almost ten episodes of Girls and every time I step on the set I’m terrified because if you’re as lucky as I am you admire the people you work with and you want to bring it hard for them every single day.”
Here are the top winners from the DGAs:
Feature film: Ben Affleck, Argo
Drama series: Breaking Bad
Comedy series: Girls
Reality program: MasterChef
TV-movie/miniseries: Game Change
Documentary: Searching for Sugar Man
