Ten million copies in six weeks. That’s all you need to hear to illustrate the massive cultural impact of E.L James’s bestselling 50 Shades Trilogy.
In book one, 50 Shades of Grey, we meet our narrator and heroine Ana, a naïve college student. She encpunters young, handsome billionaire Christian Grey and it’s clear from their first meeting that there is a special attraction: ‘In a daze, I place my hand in his and we shake.
As our fingers touch, I feel an odd exhilarating shiver run through me.’
Christian’s control-freak nature has facilitated his rapid rise in business, but it’s quickly apparent that these tendencies also extend to the bedroom. That’s when things really start to heat up. Straps, leather, and other special ‘tools’ give Ana an eye popping sexual education. It’s saucy stuff, but could they also be falling in love?
50 Shades is generating all kinds of heated argument. Some see the story of Christian’s complete domination over Ana as fun escapism and a young woman’s sexual awakening, while others consider it to be an offensive domination tale. Whatever your position, it’s certainly an easy read- you can probably zip through all three books in under a week.
It’s not high quality writing but it’s almost certain to take you to a place you haven’t been. 50 Shades is also worth it for the purely for the fact that everyone is talking about it, and it’s hard to resist seeing what all the fuss is about.
