Caroline Overington is an award-winning Australian journalist/writer whose books have been compared to American writer Jodi Picoult’s. Her writing style is gritty and realistic. Matilda Is Missing is her third novel and it’s even better than her previous books.
The central themes of this book are broken families and custody battles, but it also explores relationships as it revisits how the couples first met. It captures the good, bad and ugly sides of several working class Australians.
The plot:
Married couple Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan are no match made in heaven. In fact, the only thing they have in common is their love for their two-year-old daughter, Matilda. So, when their marriage ends, a bitter battle for custody begins …
This book actually starts with the story of another family, two grandparents who are unable to see their grandkids due to their son’s divorce, but slowly the story of what happened to Matilda is revealed (her fate is quite surprising).
Book review:
“Overington’s journalistic skills reveal the workings of the Family Court and its impact on the immediate and extended families, and the decision makers.” – The Sunday Herald Sun
