Australia’s Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson will farewell 2012 as one of the most divisive personalities in Australia. These days, that’s quite a feat.
Her biography, Air Kiss and Tell, has been a runaway bestseller. Partly because it was released around the time Dawson made nationwide headlines after being harassed on Twitter. But without that incident, she would still make for fascinating reading.
Dawson recounts the more noteworthy moments from her life with the kind of candour you would expect. There are some truly funny and ridiculous stories, particularly from her modelling days and her numerous dating disasters.
Yet there is also plenty of drama. A painful divorce and media backlash was clearly hurtful for her. There is a sense of internal tension within Charlotte- she hates being written about in gossip columns yet she also seems addicted to reading about herself.
It’s clear there is a darker and more fragile side to this seemingly outrageous public figure. Dawson discusses her brittle inner life very openly. Not only is it the most sincere part of Air Kiss and Tell, it also steadies the fluffier parts of the biography.
Charlotte is certainly polarising, but her fans are buying the book in droves. If someone in your life is addicted to the tough love Dawson dishes out on reality TV then this really is the ultimate Christmas gift for them.
