Ms Witherspoon’s make-up is my kind of look. She seems to get it right every time. Her standout feature is the skin. It seems like she must have really good skin to start with, but letting it show through is beautiful.
How to get this look:
1. To create this beautiful base, you must start with good skin preparation. Cleanse, tone (if oily skin) and moisturise.
Expert tip: Often in place of moisturiser, I will use a matt primer to reduce the risk of the skin looking a little shiny on the red carpet and to decrease the need for powder.
2. Next, take a wet sponge with foundation and lightly dust over and areas of tone imperfection, i.e. any redness in the cheeks, chin and around the nose.
3. Then take the same foundation with a small concealer brush and dab more concentrated product on any imperfections, such as blemishes, spots, visible veins, etc. Make sure you completely blend these concealed areas into the foundation and primer. And be sure to choose a colour that’s perfectly matched to the desired skin tone.
4. Around the eye area, I like to use YSL Touché Eclat as it has a very fine consistency, which avoids the product from gathering in fine lines around the eyes. It also has a slightly illuminating effect, adding brightness to the eyes.
5. Use creams. For a fresh faced look like this, I try to use creams in place of powders. Light cream blush on the apple of the cheek, like Bobbi Brown Calypso Coral, which has been my favourite for years!
You can use cream shimmer highlight for the cheek bone. I like Stila All Over Shimmer and even a cream shadow as a base.
6. Once you are finished with the creams, if and where it’s needed, use a light dusting of a fine translucent powder to set, usually across the T-section and over the eyes, to complete the base in preparation for powder shadows.
7. Now that the perfectly fresh base is achieved, as Ms Witherspoon does from time to time, you can choose to highlight one feature, like a strong red lip or a smokey eye!
Glenn Nutley’s final word: It is a common misconception that natural make-up is the easiest, in fact it takes more work to prepare the skin to look naturally flawless than to slap on a thick layer of liquid foundation, powder the whole thing down and start again, but the result is far more flattering!
