Celebrity Diet Guide
1. The Zone Diet
Celebrity Diet Fans: Jennifer Aniston (pictured), Renee Zellweger and Brad Pitt.
The Zone down low: Invented by Biochemist Dr Barry Sears, The Zone Diet advocates consuming calories from carbs, protein and fat in a balanced ratio. Hollywood Zone dieters include Jennifer Aniston, ex hubby Brad Pitt, and Renee Zellweger–who is said to have used The Zone Diet to get back in shape post Bridget Jones’ Diary.
How it works: Based on the theory that the body requires an optimum ratio of carbs, proteins and fats, this ratio helps dieters stay in a healthy zone, determined by hormonal influences in their bodies. The premise is that the key to good health is balancing hormone levels.
Weight loss factor: reportedly around half a kilo per week. The Zone Diet side effects: critics attest the diet is too low in fiber, very regimented, and there is a lack of strong scientific data to back claims.
2. The Dukan Diet
Celebrity Diet Fans: Kate Middleton, Gisele Bundchen, Jennifer Lopez
The Dukan down low: The Dukan Diet is a high protein diet, created by French nutritionist Dr Pierre Dukan. Reported celeb devotees include Kate Middleton– who is said to have used it to get in shape prior to her royal nuptials, and Yummy Mummies Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen, to shed post-baby weight.
How does it work? By eliminating simple carbs from you diet, and instead introducing low fat, protein rich foods. The Dukan Diet uses a four “phase” plan of which you eat only select foods until you reach your goal weight.
Weight loss factor: Reported to be as much as 3kg in five days.
Dukan Diet side effects: due to the high protein factor, could cause constipation, high cholesterol, gout, and bad breath.
3. Macrobiotic Diet
Celebrity Diet Fans: Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow
The Macrobiotic down low: The Macrobiotic diet is a low-fat, high fiber diet–the principles of which were revived in the 21st century by Japanese educator George Ohsawa. Madonna is a well-known fan of the Macrobiotic Diet, and her gal pal Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly gone Macro in the past.
How does it work? Especially beneficial for women due to it being low in saturated fat and high in phytoestrogens–the Macrobiotic diet is predominantly vegetarian, with a focus on low-GI, high-fiber whole grains and vegetables.
Weight loss factor: Known more as a lifestyle change than a diet, it’s said to promote general overall weight loss but also impart a radiant complexion, and lower the risk of heart disease and premature ageing.
Macrobiotic side effects: It’s very strict–and due to its high-fiber content, it could cause some initial gastrointestinal distress.
