Awards season may be over but there were so many amazing red carpet looks that we’re far from over talking about it!
We went to David Babaii, one of the best celebrity hairstylists in the business, to find out what he thought of the stars awards ceremony hair style and how we can replicate the best of them at home. If he’s good enough for Nicole Kidman, he’s good enough for us!
RESCU: Who did the best ‘natural’ hair style on the red carpet and how can we achieve this effortless look?
David Babaii: Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2011 Grammys—her hair had soft waves for a very natural look.
It’s an easy look to do, simply spray Bohemian Beach Spray through your hair to create texture and using a curling wand curl your hair in different directions to create a deconstructed look.
Tip: Finish with the Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a light hold and a really beautiful glossy look.
RESCU: Who did the best ‘old school glamour’ look and what are your how-to tips for this look?
David Babaii: Nicole Kidman at the Oscars – her look was very French with her hair swept into a ponytail with a curl through it and her bangs swept to the side.
To recreate this look use the Bohemian Beach Spray and start curling the hair to create movement. Using a large brush, gently brush out the curl to create the wave. Pull the hair back into a ponytail in the center of your hair.
Tip: Finish off with a small amount of Hair Polish to lock in the moisture and close the cuticles while giving your hair a beautiful shine.
RESCU: Who did the best ‘up do’ and what are the best products and tools to achieve this look?
David Babaii: Nicole Kidman at the SAGs (pictured)—it was such an elegant look that really suited her.
To recreate Nicole’s look you need a great blow dryer to start off with and spray some Bohemian Beach spray through your hair to give it some texture to work with.
Tease the crown of your hair to create some volume and twist your hair back into a bun and fasten with bobby pins.
Tip: Make sure you leave out pieces of hair around your face as you don’t want to have the appearance of looking over done, instead you want to keep it looking really natural.
RESCU: Which stars did you work on and how do you develop the ‘look’ with your client? Is it direct or in collaboration with stylists and make up artists so the whole look comes together? Tell us more about the insider secrets of Oscar Day preparation.
David Babaii: It’s a big process that is discussed on the day but everyone collaborates together to create the look.
This year I worked on Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at the Golden Globes, I did Nicole for the SAGs, Gwyneth Paltrow for the Grammys and then Nicole and Sandra again for the Oscars.
RESCU: What hair colour is hot right now and how do we get gorgeous shiny coloured hair?
David Babaii: I think all hair types are in right now.
For blondes it’s all about highlights and low lights while for brunettes it is about solid hair colour that is really healthy.
Tip: To get gorgeous hair, I really recommend that you use a shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate and paraben free as it will keep your hair healthy and shiny. Also make sure you don’t over process your hair, I can’t stress this enough!
