Celebrity Tricks for Thin Hair

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

It’s no wonder the phrase ‘bad hair day’ has come to be the one we use when absolutely everything seems to be going wrong: there’s just something about a dud ‘do that feels like a crack in the armour.

Thin hair is one of the most common mane complaints around, and those suffering can’t help but feel envy over the lustrous manes of our favourite celebs. Well we say envy no more. Not all stars are blessed with full manes, they just so happen to have a few tricks beyond rinse-and-repeat that make every day a good hair day.

Chop it off like Taylor Swift

She may have told us to ‘Shake It Off’, but ‘Chop It Off’ is the lesson we should be learning from Taylor Swift. After cutting her long locks into a seriously chic bob, a source close to the star told HollywoodLife that it was all in the name of hair preservation. “Taylor had hair extensions to make her hair thicker, but the extensions were starting to damage her hair. She was tired of stressing about it, so she chopped it…”

Shorter cuts stop the hair from being weighed down, creating a lightness that provides the illusion of fullness. If you don’t want to go the full bob, try a lob for a little extra length.

Root boost like Olivia

Think Olivia Palermo’s mane is thick and lustrous? Think again. The socialite sports a head of very fine hair and often turns to root booster for assistance.

Andre Davis, Olivia’s long-time hair stylist, revealed on Olivia’s website, “Styling always begins with mousse or root lifter. To dry, I begin by blowing mega fullness into her hair, directing the blow dryer towards the root, giving it lots of volume.”

Style me sleek

Cutting some length off is about as bold as Gwyneth Paltrow gets with her famous blonde hair, and no matter which cut she’s sporting, sleek and straight has been her go-to for countless red carpet events and Whole Foods trips.

On her website Goop, Gwyn’s hairstylist David Babaii revealed exactly how he nailed her ‘Edgy Straight’ look at the Emmy’s in 2011 (pictured). And the secret is two fold: use a light oil that protects and shines without weighing hair down, and a great blow dry. “I blow dried her hair with a round brush to create a sort of second day blow dry look.”

Choose the right adventure

With celebrity clients like Jessica Alba, Christina Hendricks, and Nicole Richie, we’re inclined to believe what stylist Jen Atkin has to say about hair. Her number one celebrity hair secret? “Product is key,” she says, “In this day and age, there’s a product for everything, it’s a matter for finding out (and using) what works for you!”

With that in mind, thin hair should be treated with a shampoo and treatment that helps maintain a healthy scalp, reduce hair loss, and includes volumising ingredients. And remember, no matter which products you choose results only come with regular use.

Rescu. Recommends: évolis for tonic for women and évolis shampoo for women tick hair boosting boxes you didn’t even know needed to be ticked. The result of 12 years of research and development, évolis uses botanical extracts and active ingredients that have been shown to help reduce hair loss and maintain scalp health for thicker-looking hair.

Plate up to get glowing

Mane envy doesn’t get stronger than when Jennifer Hawkins strides down the runway, and although there’s little doubt some of her hair fullness comes down to genetic luck, her super healthy diet certainly doesn’t hurt.

Jen told us last year, “What you put into your body sort of shines out in your skin and your hair. Daily juices, coconut oil…” Add daily plates full of iron, protein, nutrients and minerals and it’s no wonder Jen’s hair shines with health.

Be as kind as Kate

Sometimes doing nothing is the best thing you can do. Fine-haired beauty Kate Bosworth told Into The Gloss, “I’m not someone who overworks my hair when I don’t have to. I often let it air dry.” This is a lesson we could all learn from.

Blow-drying and heat styling are great tools for great-looking hair, but giving your hair a rest every now and then (think every third wash) to let your hair air dry will do it a world of healthy wonders, especially if you have fine or thin hair that can be a little more sensitive.

évolis 12 week Active Pack ($118.00), évolis Tonic for Women (RRP $59.00) and évolis Shampoo for Women (RRP $35.95) are available online at www.evolisproducts.com.au and in selected pharmacies.
