Are you there yet? At that phase in your life when the first flush of youth is almost gone and the cosmetics and creams just aren’t buoying your complexion as they once did? Then you may be thinking about heading into the clinic for some assistance. If so, there are some common side effects of plastic surgery you need to know about before you do.

“A risk with uneducated patients proceeding with surgery is that they are making decisions without having the correct information presented to them before the procedure,” warns Dr. William Mooney, Facial Cosmetic Surgeon at Face Plus Medispa, Sydney who strongly suggests checking all accreditations and level of expertise of surgeons before making any appointments.
Some common side effects of plastic surgery include:
- Dodgy results via a dodgy Doctor.
Choosing the right surgeon with a high level of expertise is key in addition to using FDA approved products before and after your surgery, says Dr. Will. Checking labels and asking to test post-operative skincare products before you have your treatment or surgery is important, so you can rest assured they don’t react on your skin. Failing to check all these boxes may result in a bad, irreversible or even dangerous surgery experience. - You can’t fix the unfixable.
If you are unhappy with the results of your plastic surgery, sometimes you just have to live with it. Look at over-tweaked celebrities – such as Courtney Cox and Emmanuelle Beart – who have over-corrected cosmetic surgery mistakes, and now don’t look comfortable in their own complexions. Really think through what you want, the symmetry of your features to pull it off and the possibility that you may be opening Pandora’s vanity box… - Adverse reaction to Anesthesia:
Beware of cosmetic cowboys, as going with a dodgy Doctor and esthetician may cost your life. It’s that serious. Blockage to the respiratory system or allergic reactions to chemicals used when you are ‘put under’ can be fatal. Again, check all accreditation in-clinic. - Surgery Slip Ups:
The face is a cacophony of blood vessels and nerves, one false move and you are risking enormous blood loss or nerve damage and life-long numbness in the operated area. Adversely, blood clotting is also a huge risk of plastic surgery if your Doctor is not completely up to date with your medical history and care requirements during surgical procedures. - Undetected infection:
You may be bearing the brunt of bad surgery well after you’ve left the clinic with infections proving to be a major danger post-surgery. Wounds are healing, so it is paramount that you have after-hours care on speed-dial as well as regular check-ups already diarised - Swelling:
Very few procedures don’t cause swelling. From non-invasive day treatments to surgery, some level of swelling and inflammation will occur, so be prepared not to look like you imagined, immediately after surgery. The desired results may take time, so be sure to clarify with your surgeon exactly how long swelling should last so that if something more sinister is taking place below the surface post-surgery – like an infection – it can be checked out immediately.
