It seems fitting that now that as soon as the last big summer hoorah that was the Australia Day long weekend ended, David Jones unveiled their key looks for autumn/winter 2014…
Ambassadors Jessica Gomes, Montana Cox, and Jason Dundas were at the helm of the show along with international model Cheyenne Tozzi (who returns to the David Jones runway after first walking for the department store a decade ago) and a bevy of homegrown hot models including Samantha Harris.
Between having their hair done with the wonderful people at Aveda and makeup applied with Laura Mercier (stay tuned for Michael Brown’s beauty wrap this week), all three ambassadors took some time to catch up with RESCUTV to share their favourite looks, tips for dressing for the new season, and style advice. Stay tuned for our exclusive interviews in days to come!
The Red Carpet
On Seven at David Jones Elizabeth Street saw local A-listers make their way down the black carpet that was adorned with a whimsical, forest ready for posing.
We spotted the gorgeous one-time face of DJs Megan Gale showing off a big baby bump and an even bigger smile, the sparkling Kerri-Anne Kennerley in a stunning Camilla frock, Ita Buttrose looking as chic as ever, Great Gatsby star Elizabeth Debicki, Frances and Bridget Abbot both wearing jewel-toned blue, Rachel Finch in an intricate black Lover frock, and so many more big names fronting up to celebrate the season ahead.
The Show
After the black carpet and a whole lot of flashing cameras, the who’s who of Sydney sat down in the whimsical forest that David Jones had created to watch over 200 looks from 35 designers make their way down the runway.
Ambassador Jessica Gomes came out from the cupboard doors to open the show in a striking black leather and orange ensemble from Ginger & Smart. As the show continued, we spotted plenty of seasoned DJs family members, including Ellery, Camilla and Marc and Josh Goot, along with Christopher Esber, Michael Lo Sordo and Nicola Finetti all of whom made their DJs debut.
There was also an air of finality as iconic designer Collette Dinnigan showed her ready-to-wear collection for the last time before she closes her business after 24 years as one of Australia’s most respected designers.
Ahead of the show, Dinnigan told Sydney Morning Herald, “I’ve been very fortunate that my brand has been strong enough to hold its own but that comes at a price, because it’s very labour intensive and exhausting, and that’s why I’ve made this decision to spend more time with my family.”
The Trends
It seems the Abbott girls were on the money as jewel tones are all the rage in collections from Ginger and Smart and Scanlan and Theodore.
Meanwhile we saw plenty of deconstructed glamour with Christopher Esber, Dion Lee and Kym Ellery all showing polished looks with an edge of youthfulness to them. From clever cuts to intricate detail, this is a trend for the bold ones among us!
While prints are usually reserved for the warmer months, we were pleased to see romantic blooms, animal prints, and lace adorning frocks from Camilla, Josh Goot, Love and more.
Unsurprisingly, there was also plenty of black, white, and neutral with a good measure of grey making its way to our wardrobes for the cooler months ahead and the show closed with a very black and very sexy collection from Camilla and Marc adorning the likes of Samantha Harris, Montana Cox, and Jessica Gomes.
All in all, its an undoubtedly good season for David Jones and we’re almost looking forward to the cooler weather…
