Miranda may not have been recognisable without her Victoria’s Secret get-up and her bouncy blow dry was replaced by straight hair and big wide eyes painted with tribal war-paint in stripes of orange, yellow and blue, instead of flirty false eyelashes. But it was still her; there for the world to see, on the prestigious Parisian catwalk, wearing a grey leather dress with multiple exposed zips.
Designer Nicolas Ghesquiere called this Balenciaga collection “dis-construction” and wanted to create and urban feel in what he described as a “modern collection that has no reference to the past”.
Indeed the feel was city slicker as skinny biker pants were combined with simple sleeveless shirts, hooded vests combined both nylon and leather, and pleated panels appeared haphazardly on skirts.
Leather was also mixed with chiffon and ostrich skin, skirts were fastened with hard-wear type loops and multi-coloured leather was dyed, interwoven and stitched in alternate panels of bright colours.
Elsewhere, the multi-panelled look was again utilised, alternating shiny, matte and transparent fabrics to create interesting and modern looking shift dresses.
Shoes too were a modern combination of leather and linen, taking the form of short boots. Expect to see them coming to a pavement near you very soon as it was after all Ghesquiere who was responsible for the trend of the gladiator shoe – a trend that is still going strong.
