We all know the effects that sun damage can have on our skin, but we still have a lot to learn! Rescu. recently chatted to one of Australia’s leading dermatologists, Associate Professor Greg Goodman, at the recent Neutrogena Healthy Defense launch about his expert advice for skin care.
Professor Greg Goodman, from the Dermatology Institute of Victoria, recently visited Sydney to launch the latest addition to the Neutrogena range- Healthy Defense daily moisturiser. Healthy Defense includes a groundbreaking new technology called Helioplex which fights against both UVB and UVA rays.
We chatted to Professor Greg Goodman about his expert advice concerning skin care, and how we can prevent premature ageing.
RESCU: How can we reduce or remove acne scarring from our teen years?
Associate Professor Greg Goodman: Before you can help clear the skin of scarring, you need to be past the stage of acne. If your scarring is not extreme, but can be seen in a close up mirror, scarring creams or a light laser treatment is best.
For those with extreme cases, where the acne scarring is visible at a conversation distance, you can use a filler treatment, or an undermining treatment, which goes under the skin and raises the skin back up to a level look.
RESCU: How can we prevent premature ageing in our 20s and 30s?
Associate Professor Greg Goodman: Don’t smoke, don’t smoke, don’t smoke! Don’t use solariums and really restrict your sun exposure. If you do those three things in your 20s or 30s you are setting yourself up for life. It is all about prevention at this stage, I also suggest using lots of antioxdiants and sunscreens.
RESCU: How often should we have our skin checked by a specialist?
Associate Professor Greg Goodman: If you are someone who has had high exposure to the sun, or perhaps you are a smoker, or have abused your skin a fair bit, you should be getting checked at least a couple of times on a yearly basis. If you have a family history of melanomas, you should be getting checked up more regularly.
RESCU: What future breakthrough ingredients should we be aware of in skin care?
Associate Professor Greg Goodman: There are interesting things that will progress in time, particularly similar technologies to Botox. But the problem at the moment is managing how to get these technologies into the skin effectively. I also think some of the antioxidants are getting better and better. Every time a new antioxidant comes out it gets better, at the moment pomegranate is all the rage! So we are expecting more stable antioxidants to come out soon. There is currently a lot of tweaking but we are really working on this.
