Fashion Guide To Cannes Film Festival and Famous Wedding Gowns on Show

Cannes Film Festival Fashion: Here’s What To Expect

The Cannes Film Festival starts this week, so be prepared for big gowns, huge red carpets and a lot of behind-the-scenes gossip.

Here’s your primer for what to expect of the 2014 fashion brigade – but there will always be some surprises in store.

Sofia Coppola is a juror this year, deciding what films earn coveted accolades like the Palm D’Or, and her laid-back aesthetic might need to be turned up a notch for the glam factor of the Festival. She didn’t even wear a full-length gown on her wedding day!

So what labels does Coppola love? She’s a fan of Azzedine Alaia, Louis Vuitton and Chloe, and is best mates with Marc Jacobs – so we’re hoping that he makes her some custom gowns for the occasion.

Nicole Kidman is opening the festival with controversial film Grace of Monaco, so expect intense glamour and huge gowns. Kidman’s custom haute couture Diors last year as a juror were the star of the show, so we’re hoping she goes big. And she’s still the face of Jimmy Choo, so keep your eyes on her feet.

(Also expect her to wear L’Wren Scott.  The deceased designer was Kidman’s stylist and friend, and we hear Kidman has been completely devastated by her death – so the Cannes carpet is a good place to pay tribute.)

Kristen Stewart‘s also debuting a new film – and will be parading more from the latest Chanel collection. Unfortunately she didn’t carry Karl’s vision off so well at the Met Ball, so perhaps he’ll let her go out in trainers once in a while?

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling will hit the carpet big time to promote his directorial debut, Lost River. We’re guessing Dolce & Gabbana Italian diva chic for her and laid-back Clooney-esque style for him.

And keep your eyes out for Berenice Bejo, star of The Artist, who’s debuting a new film with her husband. She took a lot of risks on the red carpet promoting The Artist, so we’re hoping for couture, extravagant shapes, and drama.

Who are you looking forward to seeing on the Cannes red carpet?

Kate Moss, Gwen Stefani And Dita von Teese Put Wedding Gowns On Show

wedding dresses

If you’re a celebrity, you don’t just put your wedding dress in a box with mothballs and store it under your bed.

You donate it to a museum – temporarily, at least.

The Victoria & Albert Museum’s new exhibition in London, Wedding Dresses 1775-2014, has celebrity wedding gowns donated from some of the most fashionable women in history.

So what are they like up close?

Kate Moss‘s John Galliano bias-cut gown is much more sheer than it looked on the day; it’s barely two layers of tulle-thin chiffon, with well-placed sequins in elaborate patterns. It’s also surprisingly heavy!

But the sweetest detail isn’t on Moss’s dress, but in Jamie Hince‘s outfit, which is on display too. Hince had a picture of Moss as a pin-up hand-painted on the underside of his tie, next to his heart.

Gwen Stefani’s dip-dye gown from her wedding to Gavin Rossdale is Galliano too, but far more complicated. Up close, its internal mechanics are revealed: it’s an inner asymmetrical corset with another layered on top, fastened with ties, loops, ribbons and a giant strap that looks like

a parachute harness. She was a slave to fashion, all right.

And Dita von Teese‘s custom Vivienne Westwood, in all its bright purple glory, is a vintage flight of fancy. With its little tricorn hat, 1800s-inspired corset and skirt, and custom Louboutins, it’s a fantasy in motion. And it wasn’t dyed its purple hue until the very last minute – up until the last fitting, Dita tried on the gown in white.

Other celebrities of their day donated gowns, too. One piece from the 30s, a Norman Hartnell silk-chiffon number with a ten-metre train worn by Margaret Duchess of Argyll, still bears the marks of being trodden on by excited onlookers, who nearly trampled the bride.

Which celebrity wedding dress would you love to see up close?

Christy Turlington Returns For Calvin Klein

25 years after her first Calvin Klein ad, Christy Turlington has returned – and is spectacular as ever.

And the model revealed that shooting the ad for Calvin Klein’s fragrance, Eternity, with husband Ed Burns, a film producer, was a lot easier than shooting it with a stranger.

The campaign, shot by Inez and Vinoodh on the island of Turks and Caicos, features Turlington and husband of over a decade Burns sprawling in the sand, and apparently they both felt the ridiculousness of the situation.

“In the beginning, we were pretty giggly,” Christy told the press. “And after the first day, Ed said to me, “I’m so glad you’re not doing this with somebody else.” I said, “I wouldn’t be doing this with somebody else.””

The good thing about posing with your husband? According to Christy, the lack of awkwardness.

“Usually,” she revealed, “you pretend to be intimate on these types of campaigns, and when they go to change a lens or the roll of film is complete, you’re like, So how about those Mets? It’s just awkward.”

Turlington isn’t just a model these days. She was on Time’s list of 100 Most Influential People last week, not for being a pretty face but as the head of Every Mother Counts, which raises money for safe births and childcare worldwide.

And Calvin Klein is getting in on the act. They’re launching The Eternity Project, a partnership with Every Woman Counts that will give 100% of all US sales of the perfume in the last week of May to the charity.

Sounds good to us – and looks good, too. Do you like Christy’s new look for Klein, 25 years after her first campaign?
