Our pick of the London Fashion Week shows? Thus far, it has to be Vivienne Westwood Red Label. Curious to know why? Read on…
London Fashion Week has only just got underway, but we already have a firm favourite.
Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label, her more ready-to-wear, less red-carpet line, is full of easily wearable ideas for the ladylike woman with a twist.
The emphasis was on 1930s and 40s tailoring, with sailor collars, puff sleeves and other accents that flatter most figures.
However, there were also accents of pure comfort – lots of loose trousers and draped blouses.
Westwood always loves her tailoring – she insists on impeccable fit – so we weren’t surprised to see some brilliantly chic pieces, from blazers to pink tweed midi-skirts with pockets.
She also showed this season’s flair for print, with brilliant neons paired alongside muted classical florals. It’s all about the clash.
The styling? Deranged housewife – with painted yellow faces and purple hair.
We predict the biggest sellers will be the dripped-paint gloves and dresses, which look like dramatic Jackson Pollock work on a wearable shape, the tactile, slouchy 1940s tweeds, and the evening dresses – classical Dior New Look ones with huge flared skirts and beautiful tops, and vivid 1970s long-line halter-necks straight out of Studio 54.
Lessons for looking on-trend: take the 1940s look and give it a modern accent, with punk gloves, coloured hair or studded accessories.
And the big accessory for spring? The scarf – wrapped around one’s hair in delicate going-shopping mode.
