You know the winners, you’ve judged the red carpet – but do you know all the secrets, last-minute decisions and intimate details of the Oscars fashion parade? Rescu. has all the gossip, from the million-dollar jewels to the unexpected gown scandal…
Anne Hathaway’s controversial dress was actually a last-minute choice. Her Prada apron-style gown in pale pink, which fell completely flat with many fashion critics for being too plain and 90s, was actually second to another creation (whispers say a Valentino).
Just hours before the ceremony, though, Hathaway decided to throw it away and go with her second choice – and be immortalised winning her Oscar in clean-lined, dart-fronted Prada. We’re still not sure it was a good decision – but maybe the other dress was worse…
Nicole Kidman‘s dress was only on the catwalk a week ago, and was flown over specially from London at breakneck pace to make it fit her.
It was by L’Wren Scott, whose London Fashion Week show was a massive success – and the second it left the model, it was flown to LA. The metallic gold-and-black dress, which was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, underwent manic resewing and alterations to be ready in time for the show – normally actresses pick their dresses months in advance!
Sally Field, who was resplendent in full-train red Valentino, tied Joseph Gordon Levitt’s bow tie for him. He tweeted that he had a mysterious ‘date’ who was sharing his limousine, and it turned out to be Field – who arranged his bow-tie perfectly. Because of course she did.
Jennifer Garner‘s jewels were worth millions – a lot of stars, including Charlize Theron, wore Harry Winston jewels, but none shone so brightly or were so expensive as Garner’s. She watched her husband win Best Film adorned with necklaces, bracelets and earrings worth two and a half million dollars.
The downside of wearing jewellery like that? You’re followed around by guards all night making sure nobody steals it from you!
Helen Hunt‘s gown was actually from the Conscious By H&M Collection, H&M’s attempt to break into red carpet dressing using ethically sourced fabrics.
The navy creation drew criticism, though, because of a key flaw – the material, ethical though it was, wrinkled really easily. Nobody makes Helen Hunt look like a frump.
Helena Bonham Carter recycled the same dress she wore to the London premiere of Les Miserables – her favourite designer, Vivienne Westwood!
The black-and-white confection is from her own closet, and she didn’t care in the slightest about wearing it twice. She’s our favourite red carpet rebel.
So what were your favourite looks of the night – did Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior make you scream, was Fan Bing Bing’s pink Marchesa your favourite?

She’s not likely to be forgotten by anybody soon after she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar on Sunday, but Manolo Blahnik isn’t impressed by Anne Hathaway at all.
In fact, he called her and Amanda Seyfried ‘anonymous’ in an interview.
Blahnik’s real name is Manuel Rodriguez, and he reminisced to an interviewer for hours about his favourite stars – who include Salma Hayek, Sherilyn Fenn and Lara Flynn Boyle. However, he had short and sharp words for the starlets of today.
“They’re all the same,” he said derisively. “I don’t even know Amanda Seyfried or whatever – they’re all the same!”
“I try to remember – the only one I remember is Julia Roberts… Anne Hathaway – pretty? Yes. Wonderful actress? Yes. But, I mean, I don’t even remember her. What is it about her?”
Blahnik’s shoes are less red carpet fodder nowadays, with stars preferring Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and other custom-made features – but they still have a huge following in Hollywood.
No word on what Anne wore on her feet on Sunday – but we can guess it didn’t start with M or B…

Ever wanted to dress like a princess?
If you have a few spare thousand pounds, you can. Ten of Diana Princess Of Wales’s most beautiful and famous dresses are up for auction in London this week, and museums and collectors are preparing to pull out their chequebooks.
Although there are only ten dresses available, they’re some of her most memorable looks, from the burgundy evening gown she wore on her state visit to Australia to the famous black velvet gown immortalised in her Mario Testino photo shoot in 1997.
That gown will probably be slavered over – we hear whispers Testino himself is interested – but it’s not the one catching the most attention.
That honour goes to the blue gown in which she famously danced with John Travolta in the White House, in 1985.
Travolta told reporters at the time that he was mildly confused when he wasn’t invited with a companion, but that he understood why when Mrs Reagan, the wife of the then-President, quietly explained that Diana had specially requested a dance with him as her American experience.
The blue velvet gown was created for Diana by Victor Edelstein, one of her favourite designers, and remains one of her most stunning fashion moments.
And if you’re a Prince William and Harry fan, one 1985 bottle-green gown carries the unmistakable print of a very small hand…
