This week goes from itsy-bitsy clothing – Miley Cyrus on the cover of V, working the sports-chic trend with a lot of nudity – to the opposite, with Mariah Carey imitating a Disney princess for her vow renewals. And there’s a bit of Downton Abbey in between. Ready for the extremes? Read on…
The sporty vibe hasn’t been this strong in the fashion world since the 90s.
And Miley Cyrus’s take on the cover of V Magazine shows that this time around, it’s not for the faint-hearted.
The athleticism trend is now hyped-up with bare midriffs, uber-short punk hair, high-cut leotards and heavy doses of leather. (Although her micro-mini shorts might not appeal to everybody.)
Crop-tops, bandanas, neon and studs all have moments in the editorial – now is the time to take your workout to the next extreme level.
The whole body-chain trend continues to be a big part of the look – but Miley takes it a step further, peeling off track pants to reveal the body chain going where normal Disney starlets don’t tread.
It’s a long way from Miley’s infamous Annie Liebowitz shoot back in her Disney days, which forced her to make a public apology for posing relatively modestly in just a sheet.

If you’ve cooed and gasped over the early 1900s fashions of Downton Abbey, you’re definitely not alone.
Interest has been so high that the producers of the hit TV show, NBC and Carnival Fims, have announced an entire clothing line is going to be on sale soon.
And it won’t just be clothes. There will be furniture, stationery, beauty products and homewares- all you need to sweep around your house pretending you’re a Dowager Countess.
They won’t be on the market till 2014 at the earliest, insiders say, but whispers are already escaping about what we can expect from the line.
The headbands and long necklaces of the series have made a huge impact fashion-wise, with retro look jewels and vintage stores reporting huge demand for imitation looks. And the brocaded dresses are huge hits, as are the simpler looks of Mary and co – long blouses with skirts, embroidered slips and T-bar shoes.
The wedding dress of Lady Mary, with its long sleeves and strikingly modern tiara, has appeared on Pinterest boards worldwide, so we suspect they’ll be missing a trick if they don’t reproduce it – or at least its accessories.
We think, however, that the long gloves and some of the more epic hats will stay firmly on the drawing board. Alas for that.

Sometimes celeb gossip has something for the fashionistas at home as well – and Mariah Carey’s vow renewal had a titbit for everybody.
While fame-watchers might have been interested in the fact that Carey shut down the whole of Disneyland for her 5-year vow renewal to Nick Cannon, we’re more interested in one thing: the outfits.
Cannon was made to wear the full and literal Disney prince regalia, including white brocade and gold braid, and Carey went full Cinderella – with layers and layers of huge tulle.
After all, if you’ve hired out a pumpkin coach, you’ve got to live up to it.
There’s no ID on the designer as yet, but we’re predicting either Vera Wang or Monique Lhullier – the ivory beaded bodice and layers of complex tulle are familiar for both designers.
Want to copy Mariah’s voluminous, classic look? Valentino‘s silk organza appliqued white gown, now 70% off at The Outnet, does spaghetti straps with style, and explodes with hand-sewn organza flowers for volume out of a Disney dream.
And there’s always Lisa Gowing‘s Sophia, which pairs a huge full silk skirt with a bodice and romantic silk skirt, for those windswept sorts of weddings (The Little Mermaid, for instance).
Or, if you want to go more demure, Delpozo on Net-a-Porter’s silk organza gown has a cute sheer collar and cap sleeves on top of its sweetheart-neckline dress, for that 1960s princess look.
