Australia is getting an exciting new label straight from the British high street – and if Rihanna likes it, you know it’s cutting edge. Read on for that gossip, plus Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding dresses, a Valentino scandal at Cannes and more…
River Island Launching In Australia
If you’ve never heard of River Island, do your homework – they’re coming to Australia, and you won’t want to be left behind.
One of the biggest rivals to Topshop in Britain, River Island specialises in streetwear, skater punk, vintage styles and cutting-edge trends. Their ranges are the very essence of up-to-date cool for the young market.
And while their clothing skews young, their accessories spawn massive crazes for all ages. Their current 1950s-inspired handbags and cats-eye sunglasses? Yes please.
If you do know about River Island, it’s likely because they co-designed a capsule collection with Rihanna – that was thoroughly critically panned. Still, the range sold out rapidly, and now Aussies will get a taste of the brand’s star power.
Local fashion editors are getting exclusive fashion shows of the latest looks before the stores open later in the year – so get scrolling through their online store looking for what you want to nab.
Our current faves? Their red stud holdall bag – very Louboutin 2013 – their cream boucle waterfall biker jacket, and their gorgeous range of ‘body chains’ (gauntlets and medieval-inspired shoulder necklaces for the 21st century.)
Will you be getting into River Island when it comes our way?

First Wedding Dress Of Elizabeth Taylor Up For Auction
Elizabeth Taylor was famously married nine times – twice to the same man – and in the mix, many people forget that her first husband was actually a Hilton heir.
She married Conrad Hilton, heir to the Hilton millions and Paris’s grandfather, in 1950 at the tender age of 18 – and her wedding dress, which was one of the most photographed in history, is now on sale.
It goes to auction in Christie’s next month for the considerable sum of $75,000.
If the design looks vaguely familiar, the lace, long sleeves and high neck were also components of Kate Middleton’s much-copied vintage-style wedding gown when she became Duchess Catherine. And now they’re all the rage.
The one problem? If you’re looking to buy it to wear, you need a 20-inch waist – Taylor as a starlet was notoriously tiny.
The whole wedding was a Hollywood extravaganza, and the gown was actually designed by MGM’s main costume designer. (This wasn’t all that unusual – Grace Kelly’s royal gown was designed by the same woman.)
What do you think of Taylor’s first wedding gown – classic or completely overblown?

Did Nicole Kidman Wear The Valentino Anne Hathaway Rejected For The Oscars?
The big scandal on Oscar night wasn’t statue-related – it all came down to Valentino, Alexander McQueen and Prada in an all-out war over dresses.
To recap the drama: Anne Hathaway was due to wear a Valentino, but then Amanda Seyfried apparently texted her a photo of her own McQueen purple gown, and Hathaway threw a tantrum at how similar it was.
The result? Hathaway wore a notoriously unflattering pink Prada apron, had to publicly apologise to Valentino, and was doubtless only slightly comforted when she won an Oscar. (Well, pretty comforted.)
And now there’s a new chapter to add. Nicole Kidman showed up on the red carpet in Cannes in a Valentino creation, all high-necked splendour and delicate lace, that instantly threw bloggers into a frenzy: was this the Valentino look Hathaway rejected?
The word’s come from Valentino: it isn’t.
No, the Hathaway dress has never been worn on a red carpet by any actress – it was a baroque, high-necked creation covered in cut-out detailing, and Kidman can sleep safe at night.
Frankly, on the pale-white Hathaway, it would have been a complete wash-out. At least in the pink she wore a little colour – and accessorised with a gold statuette.

Comme Des Garcons Team Up With Converse
Comme des Garcons has done two collaborations with iconic sneaker label Converse before – but we’re loving this new collection the most.
It takes four versions of the classic Pro Leather sneaker and decorates them with Japanese-style emoji abstract hearts.
The hi-top versions take on this season’s obsession with monochrome, covering themselves in black-and-white hearts with eyes, while the low-cut shoes are all white, black and red – more drama, more able to be worn with a red lip.
Sneakers are the new in shoe item – put away your high-heeled boots and your ballet flats for winter, this is where it’s at. Blame Cara Delevingne and the influence of skater style, but pairing spectacular sneakers with well-cut jeans or a sweet dress is the ultimate punky night look.
We think these will probably be more popular for daytime wear than the red carpet – but expect to see a lot of celebs rocking them on their coffee runs.
What do you think of the latest Comme/Converse collaboration?
