Zara Under Fire For Poor Australian Showing
Zara, the Spanish maven of cheap-yet-chic European style, has opened its first store in Sydney’s Pitt Street – but not all shoppers are impressed.
Buyers who’ve seen the range in its normal environment, in stores in Europe and beyond, are complaining that Australia got the dregs rather than the prime collections, while also suffering from a considerable mark-up in price.
Shoppers are savvier now than they ever were before, and if the allegations are true, Zara would be wise to step up its game. Image: Stella Tennant for Zara Spring 2011.
Julia Gillard At The Royal Wedding: Will She Do Us Proud?
Amid all the frothing-at-the-mouth speculation over The Dress – which, considering Kate Middleton’s fashion conservatism, will likely be (gasp) boring and copied by many other boring brides – there are more pertinent worries which have been forgotten.
Namely, what will Julia Gillard wear to the wedding, and will she manage to look respectable and chic?
Channel 9’s fashion commentator Henry Roth told the Sunday Mail, “Pants are absolutely not acceptable to wear to the royal wedding. It’s an English wedding, so it’s more like race wear: skirt suits, dresses and definitely a hat and gloves.”
We’re sure she’ll look excellent, and we look forward to hearing Dame Edna dissect her outfit, piece by piece.
Angelina Jolie Nabs $10 Million Louis Vuitton Endorsement Deal
Reports say that Angelina Jolie, UN ambassador and mother of six, is the new celebrity face of Louis Vuitton – to the tune of $10 million.
While a Spring campaign has already been shot featuring models, Angelina is apparently on board as a celebrity ambassador, presumably to wear Vuitton on the red carpet and star in an international campaign.
She steps into the footprints of Madonna and Scarlett Johnasson. Hopefully this means that the red carpet will become more interesting than in her years of endorsing St John, a label best described as ‘conservative’.
Fashion Editor and Tina Fey Reveal Celebrity Cover Secrets
On the American talk show The Today Show, the editor of More, Lesley Jane Seymour, admitted that if a celebrity thought they were a size smaller than they actually were, the magazine would – gasp! – humour them.
Says Seymour, “When we go to shoots it’s all about the ego. If a celebrity says she’s a size 8 and we know she’s not, we cut the sizes out because we know she won’t put it on if it says it’s a 10.”
It’s the week for secrets about celebrity covers. Tina Fey, in an interview at Google this week, said to her audience that magazines put their cover celebrities in dresses so small as to be “doll clothes”, and staple or pin them together at the back. Run-Up To Australian Fashion Week: Capsule Collections
With Australian Rosemount Fashion Week starting at Circular Quay on Monday, excitement – and pressure – are mounting.
Some labels, like LIFEwithBIRD, have chosen to pre-empt the fashion frenzy by showing collections early. LIFEwithBIRD’s show in Redfern on the 28th displayed minimalism, shades of white, cream and nude, and diaphanous shapes.
Others showing early include Ginger and Smart, Romance Was Born (traditionally a ridiculous display of colour, imagination and thorough unwearability), Thurley and Carla Zampatti.
Fear not, though, fashion fans – this is not a wholesale rebellion against Fashion Week. It’s just an attempt to get a hold of early buzz, before fashion fatigue sets in and all the clothes begin to look the same. Tune into Rescu. for comprehensive 2011 Fashion Week coverage!
