When Natalie (Audrey Tautou) loses her husband and true love suddenly in a freak accident, her bliss-filled world is turned upside-down. Having gone from ‘having it all’ to ‘losing it all’ overnight, she finds herself lost and puts all of her energies into her career, much to the concern of friends and family (and her boss, who holds out romantic potential for him and Natalie).
Several years pass, and an unexpected physical encounter with an equally unexpected colleague leaves Natalie in a confused place. With those around her encouraging her to open up to love, when she finally does, it’s with whom that takes everyone by surprise, including Natalie.
Delicacy is an equally beautiful and sad story about one woman’s struggle to move on. It’s a film for the true romantics among us, who not only want to believe in love, but want to believe it can happen to anyone at any time. The dual depictions of a perfect love, and a love that becomes perfect because of circumstance and need, are movingly portrayed.
As a French film it ticks all the right boxes—it’s funny, touching, romantic and intelligent. Audrey Tautou is, as always, entrancing—giving Natalie an appealing mix of both strength and vulnerability, which is needed to convince us of her unusual choice in beaus.
Delicacy may be a little unexpected, but there’s a lot of delight for cinemagoers here—and it’s the perfect choice for treating mum!
