At first glance, the pairing of Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogan may seem an odd couple, but the two strike up nice comedic sparks, and much levity ensues.

Prior to heading on a business road trip, where Andy (Rogan), an organic chemist, hopes to sell his new organic cleaning product to all the major chains, he pays a visit to his mum Joyce (Barbara Streisand).
She’s a little overbearing… and sometimes a lot. He’s a little underachieving (especially when it comes to finding the right woman), but the two ultimately need each other, and with Andy having lost his dad when he was eight, she’s all he’s really got.
Sad to see how lonely his mother has become, Andy decides—against his own best advice—to invite her on the road trip. What follows is eight very intense days, in a very small hire car, where the two learn a lot more about each other (more than they might have hoped), and, equally, a great deal about themselves.
From making sure her son is well hydrated, to wanting to help him learn from his past break-ups, Joyce’s well-intentioned but oppressive affections are all a bit too much. But despite her intrusive ways, her advice clearly comes from the right place, and what makes it truly annoying to Andy is that it is often astutely on the money.
The complex and deeply layered dynamic between a mother and her only son is perfectly captured by Rogan and Streisand. Despite their obvious love for one another, mother and son just can’t help getting on each other’s nerves—and it’s hilarious. You also get a real sense that the Rogan and Streisand had an absolute blast making this film; the pairing has resulted in a fine film with a light, effervescent appeal.
The perfect film to take your mum to, Guilt Trip is funny, warm and kind—a lovely way to start the year.
