Florence Welch was a highlight at the NME Awards 2012 in London, where local and international bands were celebrated with awards from renowned music magazine, New Music Express. The NME awards, which cover music as well as film and books, saw a host of talent getting recognition for their talent and creative work topped by stellar performances from several acts.
The NME Awards aren’t your average awards show being slightly tongue-in-cheek, honouring not also the best, but the worst in some categories as well as hottest male and female.
Kasabian’s performance was dedicated to The Monkees’ Davy Jones, who recently passed away, with Kasabian singer Tom Meighan singing “(Theme From) The Monkees” in tribute.
Another performance highlight came when Florence Welch, of Florence + The Machine fame, duetted with The Horrors on a rendition of the latter’s single “Still Life”. She continued her awards show streak taking home two gongs.
The NME awards also celebrate the worst of music, and it seems Justin Bieber’s taken the hits this time around, being named Villain of the Year and Worst Album.
Former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher’s status as a rock-god was further confirmed on the night. The magazine’s editor, Krissi Murison, hailed him as “a man who has written more anthems in the last two decades than anyone else”. Taking to the stage at Brixton Academy in south London to collect his honour, the rock star behind a string of hits including Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger paid tribute to his fans.
