The September Full Moon is also a lunar eclipse, a Blood Moon and a Supermoon! All good reasons to harness its energies, says Hay House author and astrologer Yasmin Boland.
So what does it all mean?
In a nutshell, this is one heck of a Moon. It’s more than worth tuning into. Let’s get back to basics as we dissect what is so special about it.

It’s a Full Moon. Full Moons are always worth noting energetically. They take place once a month, two weeks after the last New Moon and two weeks before the next New Moon. The Full Moon takes place when the Sun and the Moon are at opposite points in the sky. It’s a time when the promises of the New Moon come to fruition. Or not. If the New Moon is the planting of the seeds of our desires, the Full Moon is the harvesting. It’s brings conclusions and climaxes. It’s a peak time (hence why people are often said to go “loony” under a Full Moon!) It can also be a time when we realise that what we planted just ain’t never going to blossom, in which case, it’s a time to release. Note that the two weeks from the Full Moon to the New Moon are ideal for relaxing and letting go, not pushing forward but rather regrouping.
It’s a Supermoon! The orbit of the Moon around the Earth is not a perfect circle. This means that the Moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times. On September 27/28 (depending on where you are in the world) the Moon will be perigee – that means it’s closer than usual. In fact, this Full Moon is the closest full moon of the year. Its closeness to us will make it appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it’s at its furthest from us.
It’s a Blood Moon! Total lunar eclipses see the Moon taking on a reddish color during totality. This happens because of something called “Rayleigh scattering”, the same effect which makes the sky look blue.
It’s an eclipse! An eclipse takes place when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, thus cutting off the light of the Sun to the Moon. From an astrological point of view, a lunar eclipse always involves the karmic lunar nodes. These are points in the sky which relate to the movement of the Moon around the Earth and the Earth around the ecliptic. It all gets very astronomical, but know that astrologically, an eclipse is when the Universe changes gears. If you want to change your life, this is the time to do it. Projects and event culminate, sometimes in a rather spectacular fashion,. It’s all part of making sure we’re living out the life we need to evolve.
FYI . the last time a Supermoon/Lunar Eclipse combination took place was in 1982 – and the next won’t happen until 2033. This one will be visible to varying degrees in Europe, South/West Asia, Africa, North America, South America, the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, Arctic, Antarctica.
