Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, George Clooney, is reported to be engaged. The multi-talented actor, producer, writer and director has sworn profusely that he would never marry again, but it seems that human rights barrister Amal Alamuddin is a game-changer.
On Thursday, the pair were seen together dining with Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber. Amal Alamuddin is reported to have been wearing a large diamond on her left ring finger.
During the dinner, Edward Norton approached the table to say hello, and it is reported than Clooney and Alamuddin told the actor that they were engaged.
Amal Alamuddin is a graduate of St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and New York University School of Law. The Beirut born barrister is trilingual, speaking French, Arabic and English, and works from London’s Doughty Street chambers. Alamuddin represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in his extradition proceedings and is the adviser on Syria to Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary-general.
‘Women the world over may well be wondering what she has got that others haven’t,’ said Geoffrey Robertson, QC, who took on Amal Alamuddin at the Doughty Street chambers. ‘She is extremely bright and believes passionately in human rights, and she has done the hard work necessary to improve those.’
Clooney has been married once before, to actress Talia Balsam, prior to gaining fame on ER. The actor is famous for his insistence that he will never remarry. In 1995 he told Barbara Walters, ‘I won’t get married again because I wasn’t very good at it.’ Later, in 2007, actress Michelle Pfeiffer said that Clooney had bet her $100,000 that he would never marry again.
