Recreate the effortless, messy ponytail designed to complement the androgynous yet feminine feel of the Paul Smith A/W 2012 Collection at London Fashion Week. Soft and natural hair was a common trend at LFW so Rescu. brings you the insider tips for perfect laid-back chic!
The Look:
“We were looking for a shape that was masculine from the front, yet feminine in the back,” explains Peter Gray, lead hair stylist for the Paul Smith Show. “We wanted to create tight sides that give an over-lapping softness. So, from the front you see a narrow shape and from the profile you see a big low-rounded convex shape that went into a low ponytail that tucked into the neck”, Gray added. “I loved the idea that it was bulbous but not in a 60’s way, the volume wasn’t high up on the crown, it was much lower. I had to create a textured base to give hair ‘guts’ while also offering that soft fluffy look. We wanted to create a grungy but sexy, messy look making sure that the hair didn’t look as though it was freshly washed”, commented Gray.
Rescu. loves how the look has plucked inspiration from different eras – 90s grunge, 60s bouffant – to create a fresh and modern, ‘model off-duty’ style to carry you right through the autumn and winter months.
How the look was created:
- Hair was brushed out thoroughly and sectioned to allow easy access to the roots.
- Throughout the different sections, hairspray was sprayed right at the roots. Using fingers, the hair was messed at the roots and blow-dried until dry, to set the ‘messed up’ textured look. This method was repeated throughout the whole of the hair.
- For the over-lapping look, hair was sectioned an inch above each ear, sprayed with hairspray from root to tip and combed through using a fine comb.
(Rescu. suggests Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray) - Hair was then lifted, (leaving a small section at the base of the neck) and secured at the top of the head to allow the two sections to be pulled tightly. The pieces were secured at the nape of the neck and tied with an elastic band.
- Once the two pieces were secured, the rest of the hair (to the crown of the head) was sectioned and backcombed throughout to make way for the bulbous look.
- A paddle brush was lightly brushed over the top layer to create a clean side part. (Can’t go past a good paddle brush! Rescu. loves the Morrocanoil Paddle brush)
- All hair was secured at the nape of the neck and secured using an elastic band – with the bulbous shape being kept well defined.
- Styling cream was smoothed throughout the ponytail to keep the curls in place and random sections of hair were curled using the tong, to give a natural messy wave.
- To finish the look, hair was sprayed with to hold the style in place.
